Ah yes, the infamous twist that wasn't given away because parts of the film would've been impossible (driving two cars at once for instance). It just really takes away from what could've been a pretty decent horror flick. With that said it's got a fantastically gritty style of make-up, sound, and cinematography. It's shame that it's not more than just style.

Some really, ugh, "high" tension and effective slasher histrionics largely undermined by absolutely insipid plot gimmick & twist ending. The film kinda wants to have its trahsy cake and eat it too throwing away any semblances of internal logic in the process. The horror therefore falls apart very quickly which is annoying since there is some really good stuff in the slasher scenes in terms of camerawork, music and editing. Feels like two well made but different movies violently slapped together.

The tension is indeed high. Could go as high as an 80 if not for the horrible plot twist that undercuts the entire film that came before it. I recommend turning the film off 15 minutes early, you get a good scene of catharsis that works well as a bookend to the story, then just pretend the credits are invisible and stare at your blank TV screen for a couple of minutes. If you've ever heard anything about High Tension, it's that it's got an insanely obvious and stupid twist. Knowing that going in alleviates the issue, so I was better able to appreciate its streamlined purity as a superviolent slasher chase flick. The real problem? The characters and story are truly paper-thin. Thinner even than, say, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - likely this film's biggest influence - but without the low-budget grime and high-octane intensity of that film to compensate.

It's beating a dead horse to say the twist was garbage, but it's that bad it bears repeating. Like, did Aja just come up with a twist and decide to never reread his script? The movie has some nice character build up for the first 15 minutes, and then never references it again as we get grunting and hiding in closets from the worlds stupidest protagonist. Like girl, your friend's family is being hunted down and you don't go AND WAKE UP YOUR FRIEND. Gore make up and soundtrack are great though.

Was really digging the home invasion first part and the lack of backstory we got for the killer. It just seemed like he was a being there just to kill which is obvs very Halloween inspired. The twist is mind boggling and stupid, but even before the horrible twist I found it to be losing its lustre anyway. Still solid enough first 30 minutes and scattered moments otherwise.

Top badass moment? With more twists than a trap in Saw, I'm sure there were plenty. Sadly I fell through one of the massive plot holes and lost sight of the film. But really, running through a field of head-high maize within 10 minutes of it starting? What on earth were they thinking? Horror character mistake Number 1! 2 decapitations, no cats or chainsaws. (I'm afraid other power tools, however awesome, just don't have the gravitas of an off-label and badly operated Stihl or Husqvarna.)

The script didn't cater to the twist, or vice vera. A sanity check may have cleaned up the errors. But that didn't occur & there's a bunch of plot holes (literal skull fucking scene, how the knife got in the back of the truck, who drove the truck or the other car?) left for the audience to mull over. In fact, watching her act out what occurs whilst deadpan would've been more effective. Still, decent super gore & HT has the traditional lesbian undertones required for any slasher worth its salt.

Yeah, the low score is due to The Twist, but mostly because of the way it's handled. Since the movie is driving towards it, it inhibits what the characters can actually do - all communication effectively ends once the mayhem starts, because that would give it away. Since it's handled sloppily anyway, the shock is quickly replaced with thoughts of "But wait, if that's the case, then how did..." It dominates the movie and prevents it from being much more than a pile of viscera.

The music is the best thing about this French slasher flick for sure: ambient, disturbing, creepy as fuck. Does an awesome job of ratcheting up the tension and maintaining it at insane levels for long periods. Add in a disgustingly filthy and sadistic killer, and some really quality gore scenes and you've got amazing potential. Sadly, all the great set up work is totally undermined by a silly and completely illogical plot twist. Still pretty enjoyable until the letdown at the very end.

Starts off rather well, and after the necessary drama gets straight into business with some well executed gore. After the first part, as the action leaves the house and enters the streets, it loses a lot of it's tension. The ending, even though silly and impossible, improves the experience though and the car sequence is one of the most shocking scenes I've ever witnessed. Muse's music feels out of place and some of the surroundings scream cliché, but I can live with that.

God damn, that surprise twist. Everyone is going to kvetch on endlessly about it, and I agree it sucks. Up until that point, however, I was enjoying this for what it was: a pretty straightforward, tense serial killer horror film. This has been my favorite movie since I first saw it. You’ve never seen anything like this. So many movies try to do the twist at the end and they don’t get it right- this movie freaking *gets it right*. These girls are on vacation from school and decide to go to a family farm for a few days. That night an intruder targets the house and things get crazy. Disclaimer- Everything. This movie is bloody. *Actual* scary movie. Thank You, France 🇫🇷

Genuinely on the fence here – it's extremely well crafted, with Aja walking a fine line making his violence as graphic as any torture porn effort, yet somehow never making the film unwatchable to wimpier audience members *raises hand*; France is also an extraordinary lead. But then the final act plot twist is such a groaner on the face of it that there must be a deeper meaning – maybe as an explanation for why such a plucky, sensible girl would make so many wilfully silly decisions earlier on?

Not only derivative of many horror classics, but plain strips away everything about those horror films that makes them interesting and captivating -- what we're left with is a paper-weight horror film, which is plagued left and right with awful writing, no characterisation, and dreadfully dated cinematography and sound design that should stay in the '00s. And given the lack of scares, I would say its title is misleading. The dumb twist is actually the best part of this dumb film.

Thouth I certainly don't think twists were needed or they actually fit the rest of the plot or had any possitive output for the film, but even with that in mind I don't think they've managed to ruin the experience (but if a twistless cut was released I would prefer that one). I like the way it was shot and edited, the pace is right, tension works and lead actress did a great job. Story-wise it has no interest but it's certainly a well done horror movie for the sake of horror alone.

The twist does (mostly, sorta) make sense if you keep in mind that the movie is the killer's flashback. It's the psychotic killer's version of events, not what actually happened. Still woulda been better without it. We have enough stupid "twist ending" films. How about a "lesbian rescues her crush from a deranged mass murderer, they live happily ever after" film? How many of those are there? I'd have enjoyed that much more than yet another "queers are confused and sick" story. (liked it anyway)

I really wanted to like this film, but it was just too stupid. The main character's decisions made no sense, the dialogue was lame, the score was annoying, the soundtrack was juvenile, the deaths were just silly. And the twist may explain a few things, but it's so dumb and uninspired itself that it doesn't matter. As the title so subtly suggests, it does have some good tension, with a few quite effective sequences. But with everything else being so ludicrous and contrived, it's not enough.

I'm an Aja fan. I've enjoyed every project of his and I have respect for anyone who manages to make even a half-decent remake these days, let alone three. This is pretty much exactly what I was expecting from him. Fantastic gore, a nice visual and sound design (the soundtrack is good too, but nearly always used in the wrong situations) and a healthy supply of tension, as the title would suggest. However, a twist that horrendous could have only been masterminded by Tommy Wiseau himself.

"High Tension" is right. This is highly tense. It is also highly gruesome. Alexandre Aja went on to do schlock and shitty remakes and would never again make horror as effective as this. Sadly, he completely fucked this one up. The plot is at worst pedestrian, until the point where Aja decided "hey, it's half-decent so far, so let's do a twist ending that's extremely old, extremely lame, and RETROACTIVELY MAKES THE ENTIRE MOVIE MIND-BOGGLINGLY, ABSURDLY NONSENSICAL AND STUPID".

A gore-filled slasher flick that isn't very scary, but is instead nearly laughable due to the excessive gore used. The acting is just fine and the twist at the end of the film might make it worthy of a second watch, but only so that you can go through and attempt to find clues regarding it. It's just that there isn't much tension within the film, the characters aren't developed enough to make it scary, and it eventually becomes something that is sillier than a no-nonsense film should be.
