Maybe a little surprisingly, this is really just a fairly straightforward melodrama dressed up with a lot of shadows and a few seconds' worth of a recurring symbolic apparition, to heighten the sense of foreboding and somewhat reflect the protagonist's mindset. It's neither particularly polished nor substantial, but it's decent enough and you can definitely see how the style and subject matter fit into some trends that were about to be very big in German films.
