Surprisingly good adaptation of the surprisingly good book that retains much of the source material's sophistication and complexity. Has a better cast, screenplay, and direction than most live-action Disney films.

The story is too clever, simple, and endearing to ruin. Well, in any case I am glad this adaptation did not put that to the test; it is a fun, unambitious film whose only mistake was to cast a skinny person in a large person's role (though Shia LaBeouf did a capable job).

This movie isn't bad and I did read the book when I was about 10, but this score is because this film is what helped push Shia LeBeouf's career past Even Stevens. This film is responsible for Transformers and that is unforgivable.

An interesting multi-layered story and a great cast of characters makes this an enjoyable family movie. Some of the characters are a bit over the top, the switching between some of the layers of the story may turn some off, but overall I thought it was an enjoyable movie that brings all of the layers of the story together for a rather fulfilling tale.

I really enjoy movies with a means spirited approach to childhood. I had to suffer, so should these fictional little shits. That being said, this is a pretty entertaining romp, and I wish LaBeouf had kept his earnestness and charm he maintained in his adolescence, as it served him well.

Weaver and voight were the highlights of this film, as their characters (though over-the-top) seemed the most constructed. Winkler's character was really good too, and LaBeouf played his role well enough. In fact, all of the characters seemed plausible in an odd sort of way. I actually liked the transitions from present to past (Arquette's story in particular) as it made the film more interesting than your usual kid's film. Of course, it wouldn't be Disney without the neatly packed ending

Follows the book pretty well, although most of the actors are obviously inexperienced. I remember seeing "introducing Shia LaBeouf" in the credits, and thinking there's no way his career is going anywhere... And I kinda wish it didn't.

An already unique premise here is given a delicious second layer of back-story that pops up in the current tale in a peppering of delightful past-present parallels and fulfilled prophecies that work well with the bleak but intriguing desert setting. LaBeouf's hard-luck Stanley, meanwhile, leads an enjoyable cast of characters that include a loveable gang of misfit adolescents and three wonderfully nasty bad guys, bringing some heart to this immensely satisfying mystery story.

I never read the book so I had no biases or concerns seeing this. Supposedly, Richard Kelly was commissioned to write a script for it. It was apparently too dark for its built-in audience of kids, but I can totally see why he came to mind as the man for the job, because Louis Sachar's story is original and inventive family entertainment, swelling with quirks and twists and resisting the formulas that widely characterize this kind of movie.

Walt Disney knows how to produce a fun, inoffensive, family film. However, fans of the original children's book maybe left wanting the charm featured in the more layered characters trapped on the page.

Shia truly shines. It's a shame the same cannot be said about anyone at Camp Greenlake. John Voight does his usual terrible job at acting, and Sigourny Weaver does the worst I've seen in her career. I was never truly convinced that any of Shia's friends are just that, they just seemed to take up space and not much else. I happened to like the story quite a bit, but the pacing and the way they wove the two stories from the past in and out of the main plot just didn't work.

Good movie with a nice message. Overall the acting is good and the script intriguing. It does take a while to get into the movie, but once you realize all the seemingly unimportant plot points do all entwine, then the film gets much better and moves much quicker. Glad I finally saw this!

Holes is a perfect representation of the over-read novel. Even though the whole world knows the story by now, the film is nonetheless a fun and certainly poignant ride. With some well intertwined cuts between the main and past story lines. As can be expected with Disney, the main child actors are all fantastic and very rarely come off awkward. In addition are the fine performances from Sigourney Weaver, John Voight, Patricia Arquette and Tim Blake Nelson.

Pretty good movie! Young Shia LaBeouf is hilarious xD He's good though! Supporting cast works really well too surprisingly. Pretty much character driven with a fun, well-written story. Has it's tiems of humor and it's a pretty fun little Disney movie all around. Worth a watch.

Hole-y cow! This movie was pretty darn fun. Also, props to Shia LeBeouf for actually being fun to watch for once. Good job. I thought, more than anything, that the story of the film was especially good. It had an excellent feel of a prison drama, mixed with an old west movie. The characters were all interesting and had fun nicknames like X-Ray, Arm Pit and Cave Man...

Average Disney production with some good moments. I've never read the book, but personally I wasn't all that impressed with the more detailed aspects of the plotline, especially the transitions between past and present. They just seemed a little rushed and slapdash, whether these aspects have been lost from the book in transition or not I can't say. It's refreshingly different and has plenty of imagination, but it's definately a movie aimed more towards teenagers than anything else. Not too bad.

Awful. I usually enjoy most movies I watch, and I liked the book, but this was terrible. Everything about it was not good. It's like a person who knows nothing about filmmaking tried to make a Disney version of Stand By Me. If you like the book, stick to the book. If you haven't seen either, read the book but don't waste your time with this nonsense of a film.

Starts off as a sort of dystopia, then, towards the end, reminds you that it's a (good) children's movie, which is a bit disappointing but not very surprising. The dystopian correctional institute in the desert is successfully eerie, and the characters are interesting and well-acted. Great child actors, including Shia LaBeouf in what I believe to be his debut. A good watch.

*Mild spoilers* Amiable Disney adventure is pitched at children, but has enough of a dramatic hook to get older audiences in; unfortunately the film wanders on for too long in the first half, giving a lot of time to a pair of overstated performances from Voight and Weaver, before the best section when LaBeouf and Thomas make their escape. Intermingling of the flashback sequences at random amongst the present day stuff is unnecessarily jarring and irritating.

Supernatural elements seem grafted on and add to the sense that the one in a million coincidences are far too numerous and convenient for belief. Several character relationships shift from domination and antagonism to congenial at the climax for no discernable reason. And if the script comes anywhere near having a message it's when one character finds racism so intolerable they become an outlaw serial killer. This could have been a decent thriller were it not so doofy.

I think they pushed too hard to try to make it funny. They also could have worked a little more on blending the various storylines together. They jump around jerkily from one to another. It was overall good, but if you have an extra 2-3 hours, do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook.
