An appallingly repulsive waste of time, it swallows garbage only to regurgitate it and swallow it again. Everything about this film is despicable, and by the end, every loathsome moment spent watching this serves only to remind you that you could have been doing something else better. Also, the leaps of logic is asks you to take in order to digest this wretched bile simply defy comprehension. Did I mention I hate this movie?

Ok, I know the movie quickly enters the land of cliche and tops that scene after scene. But from a technical viewpoint it is still one of the best cgi works around; especially focused on a single character. Verhoeven was always on the verge of stupidity and genius. This one tends more on the stupid side, still I can't get over the eye candy.

The special effects are astounding and Kevin Bacon plays his part well. Unfortunately, the movie essentially dissolves into generic monster chases, which would be all right except for the fact that we are rooting more for the villain than the heroes.

OK, but there is just no getting around how compromised it all seems. Aside from a few sexually charged moments that cross moral boundaries, you would never get the impression that Verhoeven made it. In these scenes we get a sense of what might have been: a tale of man's frightful behaviour when social restrictions have been entirely removed. Bacon's 'god complex' in this context is interesting, but it isn't that well developed, and it devolves into standard slasher territory in its final act.

A tale of hubris and the drives unbound: L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies somehow transforms into Seth Brundle, before assuming his final form as the creature from PREDATOR (but on the set of ALIEN). Watching this for the first time 17 years after it was panned by critics then rejected by the director, its gusto in challenging the audience with an escalating set of sexual misdemeanours and crimes makes it more amusing than this viewer was expecting. More complex than its reputation and a little better too.

Enertaining enough, but my high school physics teacher once went on an impassioned rant about how scientifically inaccurate and impossible this movie is. I'll take his work for it. My only problem is that towards the end, it gave the impression that being invisible also meant that you were invincible as well. Although, the words sound the same so I can see how maybe they got confused.

I would have been more interested in the character's descent into an contemptuous individual was a result of his own dealings with his newfound power than the reaction of the chemical.

Kevin Bacon is entertaining, as is Elizabeth Shue, but overall the transition of Kevin Bacon's character into psychopathic insanity feels quite forced and prevents the movie being anything more than "alright."

Every single point in this score is dedicated to the transformation sequence, where Bacon's body disappears one layer at a time. Every - single - one. The invisible man's character arc from dedicated scientist to deranged psycho rapist is beyond contrived. Yes, that's right, an invisible rapist. I never thought I would type those words, but here we are.

I'm torn between the fact that this is an astoundingly bad movie by every standard of filmmaking - script, characters, suspense, plot, scares, and everything and anything else you can think of - with the exception that it's one of about a dozen movies last decade to legitimately impress me with its special effects. In the end, it's crap, but it's occasionally dazzling crap.

The main character is so damn pervert and weird that it actually takes Verhoeven's misantrophy to a really unresting level: this scientist turned depraved invisible dude trying to rape women -- or simply messing around with them -- is shot in so many ways by the auteur -- through flames, blood, water, smoke, with POV shots for spying -- that he's almost pointing to us, in a way. Not one of Verhoeven's best, but hell: it's just best than most sci-fi films that try to go this deep -- or weird.

Top badass moment? The fact some scientists can get millions out of the US Government to try and develop a way to make people invisible. I find I can achieve the same thing simply trying to buy a drink in a crowded bar. Works every time. (It doesn't make any difference what I want to buy either, Guinness, or cider, they're equally effective.) I wish I had that sort of enturperional panache; if I did I wouldn't be wasting my time writing this nonsense. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Hollow Man started out with an interesting premise, and managed to make it not only uninteresting, but also very boring. It doesn't have interesting characters or plot, and while it looks nice for the most part, some of the CGI used looks really fake. There just isn't a lot there. The acting isn't good, the 'twists' are obvious, and it ends up degenerating into a really bad attempt at a horror movie.

Viewed March 9, 2022. Paul Verhoeven's invisible man movie is, as you'd expect, about a guy who uses his invisibility to spy on naked women; it's also, like all of his films, about power, particularly the way it trickles down from big societal institutions to impact the little guy.

Once while travelling across this hollow land I came across a hollow man, and with promises of sweet candy he lured me to his hollow van, we journeyed across the hollow roads, the hollow highs and hollow lows, and when the hollow skies grew dark he took me to a hollow park. There he did some hollow things that touched some places deep within, and whilst feeling uncomfortably posessed, I became as hollow as the rest.
