It may be distracting using a white man as a surrogate for an oppressed people of color, but for the sake of the thoughtful, morose, and engaging premise, it works. Great performances all around.

Elegant western that explores issues of identity and integrity. Newman delivers a great performance as the morally ambiguous anti-hero and there are strong supporting performances from Diane Cilento and Richard Boone. Not action-packed or immediately suspenseful, but one where the tension slowly ramps up and unexpectedly hits you at the end.

Paul Newman is great and the supporting cast is interesting. This is a well made western with some exciting scenes and some good drama mixed together. If you like westerns then definitely check this film out.

I expect the plot will hold the attention of most western fans, but this is more of a revisionist western--one wants viewers to rethink perceptions of Native Americans--and women. Diane Cilento's Jessie is one of the most interesting characters in the film, imo. Richard Boone and Frederic March are good in this, too. I do think the message lacks subtlety, but the the film writing and performances are solid.

Thoughtful, generally absorbing western. The screenplay raises some interesting moral issues and it's all held together by Ritt's taut direction.
