These movies where you’re supposed to suspend disbelief and imagine a world where a person like Alison Brie is a nervous ugly person are a bit much.

This is just great by Alison Brie. She creates enough empathy to allow you to care then feel sorry for her. It is a little let down by the confusing ending, and maybe just going too far over the line. Really felt like there could have been a good message in there somewhere but is completely overshadowed.

Great at it's altering states of reality. A purely subjective ride with clues of certainty, but also capable of making one ponder a much more ambiguous theory.

Relatable main character and good acting from Alison Brie, however the script was boring and I couldn't finish it. Watched approx. 23% of the movie hence the "23" rating.

Led by a great performance by Alison Brie, "Horse Girl" is a fascinating character study and one of the strangest movies I've seen all year. The movie is not what it seems. The screenplay is co-written by Alison Brie, she does a terrific job at showing mental illness as her character struggles to cope with reality. I really liked that the movie was a lot different than I thought it was going to be, Brie makes "Horse Girl" worth watching, I was really hoping the best for her.

Horse Girl's parity of alien-abduction with mental illness (or vice versa) leaves the film in a confounding end that undermines the point (if any) that the film was possibly trying to make. Despite pacing issues, there are some good performances, though a little unrestrained at times, leaning too heavily into awkward or crazy territory. And thanks to Brie, the film delivers a few impactful moments. Her character swings from sympathetic to embarrassing to alienating, but maybe that's the point.

This is a tricky one to sum up. I kinda liked it and could get behind it's experimental style but it felt unsatisfying in the end. It feels like a film that had more potential than was realized in a way. This is more drama than thriller I feel too so maybe that was part of the dissatisfaction as I went in expecting a thriller (thanks IMDB) Not bad but could have been more

The Duplass Brothers logo seems to be a legitimately useful marker of quality. The socially awkward hyperreal weirdness that is almost synonymous with Duplass brothers really shines through here with an astounding performance and an intriguing script. This movie is a portrait--nothing more, nothing less. As a kind of ad hoc Madness Trilogy, I recommend Horse Girl followed by Bug followed by The Shining.

Strong performance by Brie, and at its best the movie really does well with keeping us with her in that insomniac place where you don't know what's real and what's not. But ultimately, it doesn't really seem to know where to go with that.

Another film that treats anxiety and depression in an irresponsible and exaggerated way, mainly for mixing history with alien abduction. Nowadays, these issues need to be addressed with greater support... Hm, the protagonist performance is incredible, as well as the filming techniques, especially after the plot, it makes you feel a little like her.

Wonderful performance from Alison Brie. Aside from that and some gut-wrenchingly awkward scenes that make you want to inflict physical pain on yourself to distract you from the amazingly crafted scenes of astral projection, it's finale feels displaced in otherwise slow paced and grounded story. I really liked this movie up until it turned into a huge acid trip. I wish we could get movies dealing schizophrenia with less extravaganza - think A Beautiful Mind.

What is more difficult to explain to someone: your history of mental illness or your recurring alien abductions? That thought experiment is the foundation of the movie. I just with the execution had been better at holding the reins. There's an eerie improvised approach the dialogue, which means the words aren't as impactful and thought out as they should be. Still, the creepy photography and 80's synth music is cool. As is Brie's constant Disney Princess eye acting. Marginal recommendation.

Honestly, it can feel a little silly at times. It's not all the time but it does happen. However, I admire what it's trying to say about depression/psychosis, and I think Brie did a really great job here, showcasing her skills in "going crazy" and being sad, while also reminding us how good she is at awkward loners. Some interesting visuals, and though it's not told flawlessly, the story is interesting. It's a little slow to get going but once it does it's worth the wait.
