Is it society that makes us violent, or hostels? Eli Roth attempts to answer this age-old question using gangs of evil children.

Puts the "why am I watching this?" in "God in Heaven, why am I watching this?" I actually prefer this to the original because I find it more difficult to watch which makes for a strange recommendation. Also, I do not recommend.

A dire horror series gets even worse with this excuse for a sequel. Based heavily upon the layout of the gruesome and poorly made original, it already had many major flaws to overcome, none of which have been corrected. Significantly different however is the now horrendous acting which when coupled with poor direction, sucks all possible enjoyment out of this shambollic attempt at a movie. I really hate the ultra-bloody direction recent American horror films are taking, all gore no substance.

So, basically everyone knows what's gonna happen here, then Roth kind of "soften" the gore stuff -- or at least make it less frequent than before -- in order to build an entire capitalist sordid fantasy universe around that infamous factory at Slovakia. Don't say he tries to humanize the bad guys, because he doesn't. That twist just shows how wicked this film is and how he plays both with gender and genres -- kids playing football with a girl's head and a guy's dick taken off are highlights.

Here's a fine example of the principle that very gory does not equal effectively grisly. Nor does labored post-production such as digital color filtering. It's hardly comprehensible that this script was written by an adult, and nothing this ridiculously contrived, this ceremoniously stupid, stands a chance of really scaring me. In other words this does not stand out. It's just on the bloodier end of the scale for crappy mainstream horror fare.

In many ways better than the original. The film is less heavy to watch, but thats not to say it isn't as disturbing. In fact its twice as disturbing.

Lions Gate obviously paid off the MPAA to get an R rating for this nasty piece of work. So vile that it's well beyond my comprehension how anyone could _think_ of these things, let alone put them on film. It calls our freedoms of speech and expression into question when junk like this can so easily find its way into our neighborhood theaters.

I really wanted to like this movie, but why do I feel like Eli Roth thinks his fans are a bunch of idiots? Do the majority of his films have to have a hokey, embarrassing ending that puts the brakes on a OK gorefest? I understand the concept of comic relief, but the people that are going to watch a film like Hostel don't need this slapstick shit thrown in. Just maul people, OK. Maul them good and leave out the soccer game in this movie and the dance party at the end of Cabin Fever.

This actually could have been better than the first if it just had a little more substance. It explored the killer aspect of the whole situation--how they picked their victims, the payment/business side, etc--and it started off very good. Then it just rolls itself up with some rather unremarkable torture sequences and undeveloped, less interesting characters than the first movie had.

Pointless "horror" series that continues to lead the way in terms of bad direction and poor acting. The movie making concepts of a plot, artistic style and character development are abandoned in favour of mindless gore. A total waste of time.

After watching it again I have to amend this review and increase the star rating by at least one. This movie is INSANE!!!! ...just really detailed in it's Hostel mythology, and crazy characters, and unpredictable plot, and Roger Bart, and super disturbing gore....yeah...this is way better than Part I. Eli Roth is sooo awesome! Still not as good as the masterpiece that is Cabin Fever though...

Unfortunately, this doesn't work like the first one did. I'm not even sure why Roth made this. The first one had a good dose of cerebral horror going on, but this is little more than a hollow attempt at milking its success by being even more pointlessly exploitative.

I expected a cheap, gory sequel, but this one is actually better than the 1st one. The story hasn't changed, but this time it also shows the bad-guys perspective. It has some character developments (although strange), but it makes this one all the more interesting. Also the casting of certain (european) actors is very smart and gives this film more (believable) depth.

Just like the first one, we're given the premise of torture, and then we're also given a bunch of characters who are really annoying, so... what, so we' re supposed to enjoy when they get tortured? Like, what is the point? And why do I keep wanting to see these dumb, shockey movies? Have I become so numb to everything I see on TV or film that I need to seek out depictions of torture to become intrigued? Blech, I want to shower my body and mind.

Better than the first one because it gets quick to what the first one did best and that's the scenes in the torture area. Also, I feel the commentary works better this time around where you can tell Roth despises rich people and thinks they're sickos and shows anyone who isn't rich is easily disposable (captured girl buys her freedom in place of middle class guy there because his friend paid). The first girl killed is basically the Frazzledrip video, right?!

Explains things too much at points but it's a bizarre ride. Gone is the comment on American exceptionalism and their place in the world and it's been replaced with a bleak look at if you don't have money you're fucked. I'm unsure if I like the obvious trope flip on who lives and dies but eh I'm not bored or disgusted with Roth yet.

Weirdly enough, I like this more than the original. Part 2 delves deeper into the horror behind it, all while becoming much more self aware than the original ever was, making the same repeated steps of the first seem less annoying. Unfortunately, it really doesn't defer much from the original in its formulaic setup. Parts of this feel like they were aiming for a requel because it doesn't take the necessary steps to progress more than what the first did. Pretty good, but flawed.

If you like your torture porn, this delivers with a reasonable degree of style and flair, and decent, thoughtful performances from German, Phillips and Matarazzo; Bart is slimily ingratiating and effective. It still tends to focus too much on graphic torture in a narrow, obsessive way which makes it difficult to become viscerally involved – it provokes a strong, repellent reaction, but to what end? Does what it does quite effectively – mileage will vary based on whether you like what it does.
