On a scale of one to not fun, this ranks working a closing shift at a Taco Bell located across the street from an improv comedy club on their longform night in honor of #SOTU. I did not care for this. By the time Ben Foster shows up, 3:10 to Yuma is a distant dream you had where Westerns tried to provide some form of entertainment. Between this and A Million Ways to Die in the West I don't know what we should do with them in the future, but not serious and not silly, I guess.

Brings nothing new to the table, and has nothing interesting to say. It's boring, predictable, contrived and even corny at times. This is the kind of movie you'd expect a politically correct millennial, who had just binge-watched the "Top 10 Modern Westerns" on Netflix, to create. A mishmash of things we've seen countless times before, but lacking in any real depth or character and sprinkled in with modern day PC culture BS.

This film was incredibly boring and predictable. I just got off to a good nap and I almost fell asleep watching this.

It was long, slow, and meditative. A director should know that you can pick 1 of those, not all three. It wasn't bad, and I wouldn't not recommend it to anybody, but at the same time I would never tell anyone to go see it.

A poor man's Dances With Wolves, which happens to be one of my all time faves. Throw in a little bit of Revenant, a pinch of Malick and we have quite a tedious concoction. Basically Hostiles doesn't know its own identity, what it wants to convey, the slow pace isn't helping either. If you haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma, go and watch that instead or do yourself a favour and rewatch Dances With Wolves, one sweet time more.

Not a bad western, but it feels a little slow at times and I wish we got to see more of the violence. The acting is good and it's a pretty movie.

Teaches us that curing deep-seeded racism is as simple as escorting a family across Utah to a graveyard and then killing some cowboys who are letting their livestock defecate on the undead. It works. I've tried it.

The film's major problem is that it wants to be 2 opposing things: both an unflinching presentation of how war corrodes whatever humanity its combatants might have felt for the enemy (the best parts) and one of those "inspiring" dramas about enemies who overcome their differences. The latter always seems improbable/contrived since the beliefs, value systems & nods to diversity (both a strong female & black character are shoehorned in) on display feel anachronistic - more 21st century than 19th.

Bale is always a pleasure. The writing is solid, giving a little bit of depth to the characters and conflict. It's a little tedious and predictable as a whole, but I'm a sucker for this kind of cinematography/direction, meaning I enjoy wide shots of fields, basically. The beauty of how it is filmed offsets the boredom for the most part. It's fairly contemplative but not exactly awe-inspiring in that regard, but hey, I like a moody Western.

It feels like lip service to the morals it's going for rather than anything real or earned. Perhaps worse though, the action is very poorly directed so there's little to break up the slow monotony of traveling. Strong performances and gorgeous scenery are the notable highlights.

Rivetting work by Bale & Cochrane deflects a lot from the films flaws, and makes this a powerful, gripping, if slow depiction of men growing tired of life, death and being told who the bad guy is. Whilst attempting to depict 'earthy reality' and "hostility" on all sides, the film sadly fails to flesh out the relationship that develops with the protagonists; the Cheyenne come over as peaceloving Buddist Monks, whilst the battles that are "inevitable", seem to take everyone by a bit by surprise!

An Indian wars period piece with characters that feel authentic and relatable. Christian Bale was spot on. Rosamund Pike was also good. The story seems to accurately depict the harsh and violent lives of western settlers near the end of the Indian wars. However, it failed to be entirely convincing regarding the Captain's change of heart relative to the Indians. The story is brutal and violent but also honors the humanity of the characters. Well worth watching.

Very interesting take on the western genre. Subverts its genre trappings by addressing a worthy topic that is still very much relevant to today's American identity. Alternates between brutal and subtle, with images that linger in the mind, such as the group on horseback traveling through a rainy forest. Liked this more than I expected.

Superbly done, though it is laconic at times, which one would have to admit, fits with the times and situations portrayed. The final scene worked perfectly even though I'm sure it will be accused of being artificial or contrived. In the final analysis, is there any movie that isn't.

P - Well made, but unremittingly bleak. The savagery and misery of the old west is constant. It's a little predictable too. I would watch it again on a bigger screen because the landscapes look amazing, and the film seems to feature all the greatest hits of the Western genre in that respect.

I don't hand out scores of 100 lightly. This was by far one of the best of the year and was totally snubbed by the Oscars. It should have had multiple nominations and some wins. Christian Bale and Wes Studi were both excellent, as well as the rest of the cast. Beautifully filmed, a movie that took it's time but also had plenty of action and emotion. It will be recognized in time as a classic.

Acting was as good as expected, scenery has seen better days. They're playing Cowboys And Indians so dialogue is sparse and brutality is just part of the game. A bit more of a story would've been nice, or just some points of interest along the way? I'm going to watch Christian all the way anyway, but I do wish he'd pick better movies.

It's probably because I'm playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment, but thought this was just fantastic. Haunting brutality from the get go. Rosamund Pike was good, don't think she was right for the role. The real star is Bale's epic moustache.

The story moves slowly and the characters can perhaps be described best as laconic, but this is still a very effective Western with a strong ensemble of actors. The occasional bursts of violence are brutal and uncompromising.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Those words, or variations of them, have been attributed to several different sources, including philosopher George Santayana and Winston Churchill. But regardless of who first spoke that phrase, its point remains eminently true: If we forget the mistakes that people before us have made, we'll likely continue making them.

Decent but not great, although the performances are great, Pike is just there to cry and Studi is just there to give very thoughtful glances. It is an experience, but not an amazing one. Had the potential to be a great film but the story wasn't strong enough.

This is a really beautiful film, with a very strong central performance from Bale, that ultimately gets a bit derailed in the second half. It'll surprise no one to find out that Bale has a change of heart about Studi, but the film does a poor job of motivating this change.

Its a movie with too much predictability for an western adventure thriller.. The Morals are shaggy, the point to make is blur.. Motivations are dragged off. And the character arc of Captain Blocker kinda dumb cutz its not an arc its turning a pointy edge like it was nothing.. It wasnt realistic.. He change too much w/o any empathy.. A little bit Revenant, a little bit Dances With The Wolves and a little bit 3:10 Yuma.. And you a worse movie all of these..Bale has some great acting scenes though

In which Cooper, never a stranger to depressed nihilism, tries to make sense of the world's enormous brutality in the context of a western. Rough men hold back tears, others go willingly to their death because they've had enough. Families are slaughtered, the survivors hold on to each other, and hold on. It's a funeral procession, connected to the ethereal, with the actual movie almost happening in negative space.

Very melodramatic and really cheesy, sometimes ridiculously so. Especially for a movie trying to be this gritty and profound. Lots of broad performances, lots of showing off (by the writer and the actors), nice cinematography and sound, nice costumes, liked the setting....but characters being fucking morons got really annoying at some point. It's just the most convenient, laziest form of writing, just to advance the plot in a certain direction. Not that the dialogue was better..

A grim battle over land, and nobody catches a break. It's powerful, but heavy-handed at times. Beautiful, meditative, emotional, with a score that hits all the right notes. A great example of a top of the line modern western.
