Bank employee Ruth Brock has a reputation around town for being fast-and-easy but none of the panting suitors has made her yet. She disillusions them one after the other, but the last lad is a bad sport and starts a gossip scandal, among the hens and roosters, about her and a millionaire playboy and Ruth loses her job. Figuring that as long as she has the name, she might as well play the game, she looks him up. (imdb)

Viewed March 15, 2022. A drama about gossip and young people in love directed by the underrated William A. Seiter, who gives this and an appropriately bouncy rhythm and lends some nice stylistic flourishes that bring its distinct atmosphere to life. There is also one wild, distinctly pre-code image: Nancy Carroll straddling her sister and pulling off her clothes.

Found another 1930s Cary Grant, though he wasn't the star. This was just OK for me.

great story, even if it falls to the tendency of films in this era to reach its conclusion somewhat abruptly. the cast is awesome, and carroll is convincing and interesting as things get worse and worse for her as she tries to take back control of her life after the damaging lies get let loose. edward woods does really well as the villain and cary grant is always cary grant and that's always fantastic.

A story about a small town girl, morals and local gossip. Nancy Carroll is Ruth who rejects Edward Woods who spreads a rumor about Ruth and a playboy played Cary Grant which changes her life. At the same time a childhood friend and potential husband turns up. And thats the basis of this Paramount programmer. Felt the guys largely over-shadowed Carroll here which is not the best thing when you are the center of attention. Okay little movie, but easily forgettable with it's light charms.
