Though Yvonne de Carlo is top billed in Hotel Sahara, the film is stolen hands-down by second-billed Peter Ustinov. The scene is a desert hotel, smack dab in the middle of neutral territory during WW II. Hotel owner Emad (Ustinov) cheerfully changes the decor--and his loyalties--depending upon which army is enjoying his hospitality. Likewise, Emad's sexy fiancee Yasmin (Yvonne DeCarlo) is equally effusive to both the Allies and the Axis. (allrovi.com)

Somewhat laboured comedy works best in the second half when it switches from stilted high-comedy to ridiculous farce, but still never quite finds its feet (or a comfortable rhythm). Ustinov's wonderful performance (distinctly Peter Lorre-ish, if you amped him up to 11) gives the film most of its juice, while a fascinating concept (about the sometimes arbitrary nature of 'sides' in a conflict) more or less falls to the wayside.

The adventure queen Yvonne De Carlo wanted to try something different, so she went with a desert comedy with Peter Ustinov. She might not be a natural at the comic stuff, but it was cute watching her try. Hotel Sahara (1951) is a pleaser, in that it gives smiles to the war chaos. Don't go expecting massive laughs. This one rides more on a continuous silly nature.
