A thousand corpses seems a tad excessive. I mean, one hundred corpses would be horrifying. Ten even! But a thousand? A thousand is a bit much.

Sid Haig is the flashy stuff Rob Zombie tried to do whenever he kept cutting to flashy stuff. Just a lil baby Walter Goggins.

Zombie's debut is a cleverly designed and constructed tribute to ghosts of horror movies past; explicit mash-up of ROCKY HORROR and TEXAS CHAINSAW is rarely tense or scary, but its parade of freakish grotesquery is genuinely unsettling, fired by a cock-eyed sense of black humour and scathing wit. Terrific cast all play to the cheap seats, with Haig especially great fun (and sounding very Tommy Lee Jonesish); Zombie's obvious affection for Golden Age Hollywood is also a nice surprise.

Feels more like Rob Zombie's exploration into what works and what doesn't in a horror film. Tons of different styles and scares are used. While the black comedy works somewhat the movie on a whole doesn't really work due to so many different styles being used. If you think of it as more of an experimental film though it'll make you enjoy it slightly more.

Rob said Universal pulled the plug on the film when a test audience cheered at the execution of Walton Goggins and I think we all need to sit with that. Oh good we didn’t because this movie keeps throwing all manner of shit at the wall to see which colors stick. It inhabits the language of past-midnight The Ghoul Show if he got to burp over a snuff film. The style IS the substance, a menagerie of beatnik roadside AM Americana, but lofi heretical.

It's no landmark, and he didn't invented a new genre, but Rob Zombie created a very creepy and funny horror flick. The Devil's Rejects is a lot better but this flick has definitely a right to exist.

Rob Zombie's exploitation horror film experiment. This is a pretty generic, mindless and cartoonish gore/splatter flick with barely any plot in it. Still, it has some fairly decent scenes, and it's clear that Zombie has a love for filmmaking.

It wears its Texas Chainsaw influence prominently on its sleeve, but this flick is savage and psychedelic, packed with freaky characters and an ever-escalating sense of insanity. Excellent grindhouse effort for a first time director.

Seemed like Zombie was throwing in everything but the kitchen sink because he had the means to. There are lots of spooky images sprinkled throughout the film, sure, but they appear for no rhyme or reason, and at no point does one start to care about the characters involved. Didn't understand what the point was of the last 20 or so minutes--was hoping the movie would just end already, quite frankly. Not my style at all. Spaulding was pretty rad, to be fair.

Severly Hooper-inspired -- specially by the out and loud (and underrated) sequel --, but it's just too bad how Zombie ruins most of the chilling, macabre, disgusting stuff with too much WACKY AS FUCK negative vignettes, ridiculously "sexy" flashbacks and a bunch of other seamless distractions. I just couldn't care less about its convoluted though dumb plot -- Spaulding feeds Firefly family with new flesh, who feeds Dr. Satan with new flesh... -- but I just love Moseley, Haig and Goggins here.

It's clear that Zombie loves horror films, and that's definitely to his credit. But this movie is fairly generic and uninteresting, with annoying and unlikable characters. Sid Haig is the major exception, he stands out in all his scenes and elevates the quality of the film immensely. Zombie's followup, The Devil's Rejects, is leagues above this.

One-of-a-kind musician Rob Zombie makes his love for horror even more obvious with this, his directorial/screenwriting debut. It's not a particularly original film but I don't think it was intended to be. Also, Zombie seldom goes for instant scares, opting instead for atmosphere, suspense and shock. The score, co-written of course by him, was very good, as was the editing and the overall direction. It plays like an homage to his favourite horror films but via his own visual and sonic aesthetics.

A film that can be entirely summed up in four words: "Extra Gory, No Story." If only rob Zombie made this film about his character...

Zombie's long delayed debut sat on the shelf for 3 years, and it is easy to see why: it's a cheap, nasty, virtually plotless throwback to tawdry drive in fare that was completely out of step with the post-Scream horror world. It is also a stylish discombobulated mess that works in fits and starts due to solid turns by Mosley, Haig and Black and Zombie's visual eye and flair for set pieces, but there is no glue holding it all together. It's patchwork quilt film making with overly visible seams.

666 review!!....."That was so badass! Dr.Satan! AHHH!!! DR.SATAN!!!". Truly one of one my favorite evil movies. Zombie really blends well the sicko horror and humour so well. The old school filming style and look works well and the characters are great. The acting is bang on, especially Haig as Captain Spaulding, and the rest of the crazy family. Such an easy flick to have repeated viewings and catch little tidbits you may have originally missed.
