Everything that happens makes sense within the internal logic of the film... it's just cranked up beyond the maximum. Everything in this movie is completely over-the-top, from the syrupy-sweet intro to the insane deaths to the brilliant use of music and sound design. It's one of the most audacious films I've ever seen, and I haven't felt this exhilirated in quite a while. It's extremely entertaining, infinitely bizarre, sometimes quite funny, and always surprising.

The moment I saw an old lady gleefully dance with a skeleton was the moment I felt validated in my decision to watch this movie while blazed to the gills. There's a lot of Scooby-Doo-meets-Evil-Dead-II-style over substance that leads to a delightfully odd but surprisingly good time. I laughed every time that Kung Fu theme song started blaring. Every damn time.

This is, quite simply, the best film I've seen in my entire life. An utterly deranged ghost story about seven young schoolgirls who go to visit a haunted house owned by an aunt of one of the girls, and... let's just say wackiness ensues. Boy oh boy oh boy, does it ensue. Watch this. Thank me later.

I'm not going to pretend this is a good movie. It's not. It actually has to remind you at the beginning, "A Movie! House!" in case you get confused. But what it is is audiovisual insanity of the highest order: the absolute contempt for genre and script (horror/Toei Pink) creates an onslaught of editing and directorial experimentation not seen since the days Nikkatsu kicked Suzuki out on his ass for doing something new. Not a film; an experience.

Dean Franz calls it an "utterly fucked up piece of cinema" and aptly compares it to 'The Happiness of the Katakuris'. Certainly way too weird for me (nigh-on unwatchable in parts, actually) but if you're into strange cult films and/or avantgarde curiosities, you will want to check this out. It's one of a kind, for sure.

In this bonkers Japanese horror, Obayashi uses all the camera tricks and cheap special effects at his disposal to create a deliciously absurd nightmare, with every passing scene offering a more mind-boggling display of creepy, colourful, chaotic weirdness than the last. Visually, it's an unforgettable comedic treat, and the deliberate bad acting and one-note characterisation make it all the more hilarious.

This is the pinnacle of Cinema. It's so bizarre and incomprehensible it transcends any and all attempts at logic, and creates something that cannot be described, only experienced. There's nothing that accurately describes it, House simply IS and nothing I say will do justice to it. I imagine this is what HP Lovecraft characters see when they gaze upon the great old ones. To know House is to know madness, and those that emerge from it with their minds intact come away changed.

This was just fucking hilarious. It's essentially a spoof movie, except it predates a lot of the movies it would appear to be spoofing. The plot is a basic "haunted house" affair, but the plot is unimportant. Don't think about the plot. Instead, think about the absurd editing, and the intrinsically hilarious characters, who are named after their single discernible characteristic: Fantasy, Melody, Kung-Fu, etc.

The film is campy and absurd, and is packed with clever effects and camera/editing tricks...a bizarre combination of virtuoso technique and rapid fire strangeness. Audaciously stylized horror comedy that clearly attempts to break some kind of record in zany wackiness. I can't recall a single scene I could describe as predictable or normal although it has a weird relationship to generic conventions. Tone is quite elusive between wry satire & childlike surrealism. More consistent with its startling fuck-the-brakes approach. Dunno if it's clever or just manic beyond belief but I can confirm it's hellishly entertaining & frantically OTT like nobody's business.

"I need some time to think things over... in the countryside". That melodramatic delivery and editing was the best thing I've seen in a long time, and it feels precognizant of Twin Peaks. "I just wish life could always be like those summers up on... Pearl Lakes". This came out the same year as Stephen King wrote The Shining so it's hard to say for certain, but I like to think he pilfered the premise

Campy arthouse insanity. Equal parts comedy, drama, children's fantasy, martial arts, musical, animation, softcore porn, action, experimental avant-garde horror. It isn't "good" in any sort of conventional way. It will crack you up with its ridiculous creativity and creative ridiculousness (design and editing for instance are just meticulously warped). Reminded me of Czech New Wave movies, particularly Valerie's Week of Wonders and The Cassandra Cat, but this is better.

An example of when going hard on being "strange" and "different" ends up creating something mundane. The style is so overloaded with blue screen effects and the action with non-sequiturs that the film becomes dull and same-y. That the plot ultimately bends to a fairly typical horror arc, again despite the creativity on display, only enhances this dulling effect. Some contrast between normality and insanity would have gone a long way.

Not much of a story, characters or even interesting ideas (note: more cheesy than scary), but I suspect most people enjoy the film for the filmmaking. Initially, I loved the playful tone and creative filmmaking in high gear. However, while Obayashi has creative ideas, I'm not sure he has the skill to put these ideas to good use; some restraint might have served the film better. I didn't enjoy the film, but I appreciated the effort (probable score: 72)

I liked this, but instead of seeing it as an over-the-top laugh riot, I found it to be profoundly unsettling and scary. Obayashi parodies so many genres, switches mood and styles so often, and uses so many different visual tricks that I was never sure what universe I was in or how I was supposed to feel. Consequently, stuff that would have seemed corny, stupid or outrageous in some other movie shook me into a permanent state of suspended disbelief, leaving much room for anxiety and horror.

The purposefully "bad" tone and deliciously garish aesthetics are a joy, and the anything goes visual style is one of the most unique I have ever seen. It oozes with unabashed movieness. The inane proceedings belie the serious subtext, namely fear of menstruation and adulthood, and the monologue at the end is surprisingly moving, albeit rather melodramatic and cheesy. Its themes and aesthetics are informed by everything from Hanna-Barbera to gialli, and prefigure filmmakers from Lynch to Araki.

"Ingenuity" is not exactly the word i was expecting to use for depicting a japanese horror film. But, surprisingly, it's just that - the goriest most thrilling bits are conceived so unexpectedly simple and pure, unpredictable and raw, like in a genuine nightmare. Starts as a teen comedy/mystery and turns into some kind of trip with suprisingly gory parts. It's hard to see who was the original target audience but luckily they didn't care about those things in Japan circa 1977. The director uses every trick in his arsenal and that keeps the film interesting throughout. Some of the (video) FX are outdated but that's a minor complaint. An unique experience - even if the whole is perhaps lesser than the individual parts.

I can't even begin to describe this. It's delirious, absolutely mental, a work of surreal horror/comedy filmed through the lens of an American sitcom colliding with Scooby Doo and Benny Hill, an LSD-filled madhouse of dadaist collage and kitsch revelry. A weird film that's for sure - but a film that lacks substance. It's random, but randomness doesn't make the movie funny or scary, in fact it balances the two poorly. The characters were just gimmicks rather than actual characters. The movie just loses steam by the end when it cranks it to 100 with the craziness, but it also becomes sort of boring once we become used to all the weird things. It just throws stuff and hopes you like at least something.

House is so fun and unique that I'm almost surprised it hasn't found major mainstream popularity. I never would've heard of it if not for the internet. For how zany and psychedelic the entire experience is, I found parts of it exhausting. It gets better about that as it goes, but the parodying of an idyllic group of girls outstays its welcome and some of the dialogue between the madness gets dull. Many shots linger too long, and it's a movie of moments until the hysterically chaotic finale.

In the hands of a less talented director or a cast who weren't quite sure of what they had signed on for, a film like Hausu could be a mind-blowing mess. Fortunately, the director has enough creativity, whimsy, and reckless abandon to turn what is on the surface a fairly standard horror plot into a strange mish-mash of genres that predates such modern psychedelic fare as Miike's Happiness of the Katakuris. Thankfully the cast appear to be in on it as well, as the performances never disappoint.
