How to Build a Girl

I wanted to like this, but from the beginning it was on a different wavelength. It speaks in broad indie cliches without adding much of its own. Instead of building Johanna, the movie builds on its story, which is one we've seen a hundred times before anyways. It continuously sacrifices character consistency and depth so it can use Johanna as plot device. I really want to see more offbeat and colourful woman-directed movies about girls, but this was too cliched and clumsy with its characters.

It took me a while to get into it but it ended up winning me over eventually. Not that I love it but it has some good things going for it, such as some of the jokes which landed really well, and the lead performance which was solid. Good message about building yourself up.

How to Build a Girl mixes youthful exuberance with conceited clichés to deliver a film that is not only disappointingly shallow but often downright irritating. With an impressive repertoire of credited-cameos from British celebs, the film spends its time on Feldstein's "Jo-Hanna" and her not so internal monologue. Her performance is enthusiastic, perhaps even good, but she never escapes the American-doing-a-distracting-Wolverhampton-accent territory. Some good scenes, in a mediocre-at-best film
