Dreamworks first real steps away from being a second rate version of Pixar, the story may not be the most original, but I'll be damned if it isn't well told. It's a fun film, with some genuinely spectacular moments, and endearing characters. Well worth the watch.

A definite feel good movie, I don't really know why. I was just really happy when I left the theater. The dragons are all pretty cute, which coincides well with the story. The animation is really great and the voice acting is very good as well (finally Gerard Butler gets to do a movie without faking an American accent). It's great to see Dreamworks bring the goods so Pixar doesn't just dominate animation every year. Extra-kudos for taking a slight risk at the end. Recommended to all.

With an incredibly deceptive title, this supposed instructional film is little more than a feel-good fantasy flick about Scottish vikings (what?) and dragons that don't exist. Meanwhile, those of us with real dragon problems still worry about them shitting the rug, because the definitive guide on how to train a dragon *still* does not exist.

The dragon thing doesn't usually turn out very well on the movie screen (Reign of Fire, Dragonheart), that much is known. How to Train Your Dragon has a much more light-hearted take on the subject, and succeeds mightily. Spectacular visuals, well timed comedy, characters with heart, and.....vikings! (at least it's not goddamn pirates or something) The story itself isn't anything new, but the film itself is really a breath of fresh air. It's a rare thing indeed from Dreamworks, but bravo.

This is one of the few 3D movies where the use of this technology makes sense, so far. It enhances the action elements, notably scenes of explosions and Hiccup riding his dragon, which seemingly is the major draw of 3D. Furthermore, it has a nice plot consisting of a mix between a coming of age and buddy picture. It spoke to my inner child, and certainly if I still was an 8 year old, I would be riding the family dog whilst concocting a scheme to build it wings and make it shoot fire.

The dragon flights/fights were well animated especially the final showdown. Comedy wise it was definitely hit or miss, nothing really laugh out loud but the Nightwings face made me smile. Its also a story that is predictable so nothing new but it doesn't make impressing dad the main point which was welcome. Good movie that is at least a rental.

As comedy it's sort of kiddy and hit-or-miss, but as fantasy action-adventure it's extremely successful and an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys that genre. The end of the movie has a mountain-sized fuck-off kaiju megadragon who could kick Cloverfield's ass and is definitely one of the coolest things I've seen on the big screen lately.

(3D review) The 3D is put to great use here, one of the best I've seen (Roger Deakings apparently worked on the film as a visual consultant), yet I grew tired of the film about an hour in, devoid of a genuine heart beneath its entertaining surface. The little characterization the film had to offer ended up feeling undeserved. Fun while it lasts, definitely a film for kids and not to ... HOLY SHIT, DID THAT DRAGON JUST EXPLODE ???!!!

Dreamworks finally cuts clear of its own underrated reputation. They made a movie for kids that didn't make make their parents groan, but didn't take things into the adult realm as much as Pixar does. While I prefer a Pixar flick, parents may find themselves pleased at an in between movie.

The story is not that exciting (still, more interesting than in *name any disney film except for Lion King*)... but the wit, the flight scenes and (yes, you read this correctly) the cuteness of the dragons... amazing. I can't recall being so happy after a movie... ever.

Remember the chatter about modern 3D animations enhance their horizon to adults alike with cleverly encrypted subtexts? Not this one. It's mainly for the 5-13 crowd all sanitized, every dillema presented with sharp corners. There was only a few moments that grabbed my attention. Vikings do viking -stuff-, dragons do dragon stuff, there isn't a constructed reality whatsoever.

An entertaining a superbly fun movie for kids and adults alike. Not entirely original in its basic story structure as it's about a child who's immensely talented in an unconventional way that no one can see. However the viking setting allows for a new and interesting spin on it. Gerard Butler and Jay Baruchel both give great vocal performances and make the comedy work. All and all the CGI isn't as good as Pixar but everything else could be on par. See it.

Animation is splendid, but it's brought down by a horribly hammy script, awfully unsatisfying pacing and the fact that the "name that celebrity voice" game is only fun for 5 minutes until you realize most of them are miscast. Has some extremely haphazard and corner cutting character development towards the end. Someone should have told the screenwriters that less is more because it's extremely annoying to see some of the fantastic sequences brought down by retarded plot development and delivery.

There's a timely message about the benefits of understanding an enemy rather than just killing them - highlighted in some charming scenes of the boy& dragon slowly getting to know one another - as well as a ton of eye-catching scenery as they fly, but little of it exhilarates. There's not enough wit/unpredictabilty 2 make most of this more than mercilessly predictable& just 4 kids. It's pointless CGI 2 try & convince viewers' eyeballs that they're flying if their hearts & minds aren't soaring.

"How to train your Dragon" is Dreamworks first movie that has the potencial to be mentioned in the same breath with Pixar movies. This is a wonderfully telled story about a boy and his dragon who stand up against the old traditions of the wikings and against his father who wants a son that kills dragons, not tame them. Simply a wonderful animation movie with the cutest dragon I've seen in my entire life!

I. Loved. It. Old-fashioned, sweeping movie magic served with dashing 3D and a truly great score that would make Alan Menken proud. DreamWorks Animation's most successful flick (aside from the Shrek franchise) is also their finest to date and if I had to choose which to watch a second time, I'd pick this witty yet tender adventure ride over Toy Story 3 or Avatar any day. "Everything we know about you guys is wrong" might be a naive metaphor for our fear of strangers, but striking nonetheless.

Okay so kudos for actually trying to focus on a kind of story, instead of relying on slapstick humor to carry the whole thing. Sadly the story is a completely unimaginative by-the-numbers fish-out-of-water fable, hailing the weak geek genius, with an added 3D pet dragon, cos, like, what kid wouldn't love that, right? So yaay, another movie for the little rascals, as if their ADHD driven minds didn't have enough on their plates. For the grown ups: Move along, nothing noteworthy going on here.

Of the same mold as Kung Fu Panda, and almost as great. Many frowned when Po & Co. swept the Annies. However, even though I admire Pixar's output as much as everyone else, in terms of sheer entertainment through perfect pacing and choreography in that film and this, their new outing, Dreamworks are now in the lead. While they are infinitely inferior in terms of originality and emotion, that's more than made up for with action, fun and eye candy. Don't miss this sweet, terrific film.

Animation and characters are good but you're still saying to yourself this just ain't Pixar. Storyline builds on the premise that dragons are people too, using the nerdy hero, non-understanding father, winning over the good looking babe, and teaching trust to a mythical reptile (its hard enough with mammals) subplots. But the action's pretty good, there's some good humor, and I think the kids should love it--which after all....

Simple, heartfelt, and gorgeous. Easily the best Dreamworks animation film to date, though not quite Pixar quality. One more movie like this and Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders will be well on their way to redeeming themselves for bringing Lilo and Stitch into this world. Character design and animation are superb and the flying and battle sequences look awesome in 3D. Jay Baruchel's voice does get a bit irritating after a while though. No pop culture references or dance sequences!

I credit my enjoyment of 'How to Train Your Dragon' directly to my avid fandom of 'The Dog Whisperer'. It's almost as if Hiccup watched a marathon of Cesar training out of control dogs and tried it on a bunch of fire-breathing dragons. Hiccup's voice does get on the annoying side at times, but suits his character. The flying scenes smelled of 'Avatar', not really adding anything to the plot. Just flying for the sake of throwing things at your face in 3D. The ending was refreshing too. Fun flick.

This is a beautifully animated film that feels very familiar. Read from "familiar" what you will - I mean it in the sense that the story, characters and execution all feel very formulaic; nothing all that new or ground-breaking is brought to the field, but it is still executed beautifully. The characters are charming and there are certainly some sweet spots in terms of humour. Certainly a cute and easy-to-watch family film. An entertaining way to spend an hour and a half.

Dreamwork's "How to Train Your Dragon" is not quite in the league of Pixar favorites like "Up", "Cars", and "Wall-e", but it is very close. The story is exciting, the action sequences are very satisfying, and the characters are memorable. I'm glad I forced myself out of the house to see this one at the theaters. Unfortunately, I didn't drive the extra miles to see it in 3-D. I wish I would have.

I have to say, I'm surprised at this film's massive critical reception. "How to Train Your Dragon" is a 'satisfactory' plot with little character development saved by sharp animation, thrilling action sequences, and glorious 3D. The human element is lacking, but our main little hero and new pet dragon are only engaging just enough to keep us interested in between the visuals. Overall, Dreamworks Animation brings another decent movie, slightly humorous, and heavy on action.

Why kill the enemy. Better, understand it, 'liberate it' from bad leadership and make it your pet! It feels such a right thing to do too. The dragon riding stuff was perfect, as was the general art and mood of the film. But I can't quite get past the usual "let's all be friends" message that would encourage kids to pet alligators or ride bears. The message of harmony with nature is so patronizing that its sickening; not all things need to be non-threatening for the sake of kid's entertainment. Once in a while it would be nice if monsters were just monsters and not simply misunderstood pacifists.

How to Train Your Dragon is one of my favorite films from Dreamwork's Animation Studios and it's definitely a worthy mention alongside 'Shrek'. I expected style over substance, but I was completely surprised by the depth of the story telling. I instantly rooted for Hiccup & Toothless and the chemistry between the pair is the heart of this film. All round the animation is solid, but the flying sequences in particular are incredible. A few of the plot points feel lukewarm (see Astrid's quick coming-around, the kid crew coming to the rescue), but the coming-of-age story of a boy finding acceptance (see the bookending "all of me" gestures) within a deeply stubborn culture (see the bookending Berk narrations) burns strong, as do the underlying pacifist sentiments. Superb voicework (dryly witty Baruchel is a great lead-"Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile") adds plenty of effective comedy and drama to the flying action.

The main story of Hiccup and Toothless is a beautiful testament to friendship overcoming differences. The animation is flawless and uses 3D effectively. The soundtrack is soaring and wonderous, to be sure. However, most of the supporting characters were lacking and the revenge story is a bit uninspired and occasionally cliche. Despite these flaws, this is still one of Dreamworks best animated films and the ending provided for something more real and emotionally moving than initially expected.

Beautiful animation and fun character designs are two of this film's strongest points. The plot is a bit familiar, but played well enough that it doesn't grate. The animation really outshines everything else this movie has to offer. The fight (and flight) sequences are exhilarating, especially in 3D, but I felt like the supporting characters were weak and uninteresting, jokes were tame (albeit charming), and the plot had some missed opportunities to make it something truly original. At least the ending was kind of ballsy, but it wrapped up too quickly.

Never mind about that; movies *are* a visual medium, and this movie really gives you your money's worth in terms of fine visuals and canny use of the 3D gimmick.
