this could have been a colossal bore, but it wasn't, maybe because of the huge variety of tasks to be done, maybe because of the camera, often digressing to shuffling feet and emotionless faces, and maybe because of the clever ABA structure. an entire sociological study could be done on the stark gender differences; each job is very homogeneous, depending on whether the task at hand is typically masculine or feminine. division of labour at work? could do with a bit of editing down though.

As I was growing more restless and irritated, watching this film slowly go over the minutest detail of this factory shop and its industrial line, it suddenly dawned on me that this is the exact sentiment I would feel if I worked one of these jobs. So, I guess this is a successful film? I don't care, still boring.

The workers are voiceless automatons, laboring at their repetitive tasks. Malle gets right up in their faces, capturing a humanity that's on the verge of being swallowed by the process, often framing them in a manner that suggests they're trapped by the machinery. However, although I get that the drudgery is kind of the point of the film, 72 minutes of this gets to be a little tiresome and the fascination starts to wear off. Still, the measured rhythms of the film can be hypnotic.

Strangely watchable depiction of Taylorisation, but where, at a distance of 45 years, what stands out are all the little cultural details that remain, not yet totally swept away (forms of dress, mannerisms, gender divisions, etc.). In addition to all the safety measures and hi-vis clothing that are now ominpresent in industry, one presumes that most of these tasks are now robotised and a remake would be nearly humanless. The consumerist midsection also seems quaint when viewed at this distance.
