Human Highway

Probably would have been better on drugs.

This movie is bad enough that I sort of want to recommend it as essential viewing. It's akin to Alex Cox's vastly superior Straight to Hell, a cobbled together artistic effort by a bunch of musicians and their friends, except neither Young nor co-director Dean Stockwell have Cox's chops or charm. In a prolonged dream sequence Young and Devo perform a cover of "Hey, Hey, My, My," and it's mind-bogglingly abysmal. The film is memorably awful.

Viewed September 9, 2017. As far as rockstars go, Neil Young has got to be one of the weirdest. He's not endearing like David Byrne, say, but actually sorta creepy. I think it's in his eyes.

It's one of those films that breaks so many cardinal rules of film-making that I can' tell if it's a terrible disaster or an avant-garde masterpiece. All I know, is that it between the campy neon aesthetic, the surprisingly catchy musical numbers and the surreal dream sequences, it was a film that I enjoyed immensely.

(Watched the recent Director's Cut) The only part of this movie worth watching is the dream sequence. Disappointing, as I love Neil Young, Devo, and Dean Stockwell.

Good only for the Devo numbers, especially their version of Hey, Hey, My, My with Neil at the end. Pretty much all the rest was garbage, but it was interesting garbage. Basically a less clever version of Forbidden Zone.
