Hymyilevä mies

So glad I'm able recommend a recent Finnish film. This tight snapshot of Olli Mäki is built like an anti-Rocky. A sports drama where the heroism of the fighter comes from a semi-conscious rejection of national identity & success as defined by media & commercial/political pressures. Wonderful 16mm b&w cinematography creates a vivid contrast between the rural lifestyle dictated by natural elements & the budding urbanization that informs both the personal drama & the period context of the story.

A pleasant and sensitively observed character drama which is only about boxing in an incidental way. The scenes of Olli's life are depicted in a very naturalistic way and like him, we only realise gradually that winning a boxing match is not the most important thing that will happen in his life. The pacing and different narrative forces are masterfully interwoven by the director. The film may end on a kind of anticlimax, but it's that which makes Olli the antihero we (and sports movies) needed.

Simple, charming and humane. Great acting, decent writing, excellent cinematography.

Enjoyable, quite pretty at times, though the light plot isn’t hugely compelling, and gives rise to some stretches of padding (no pun intended).

Olli Mäki is an ill-looking boxer who can't handle the pressure of being put up for a championship fight. Not even his new girlfriend can do much to help him out of his misery. The 16mm beautifully evokes Scandinavian vérité of yesteryear, but the protagonist's glumness only takes you so far.

From Finland we get a intimate boxing movie in black & white. More a flow through the build-up of the fight than the in-ring action itself. Shows what a circus boxing is and has a very local flavor. Not bad at all.
