This film is the typical example of a good premise blunted by farfetched sterility of interpretation. The novel stands right at the line golden age of science fiction is over and silver age starts by the crossover ideas parallel to postmodernism. Feeding upon the romantic hopelessness of vampiric fiction it is far darker than the movie. It seems Lawrence was afraid of the crowd reaction and cuts the possible schizoprenic interpretation short. I'm pretty sure the glass was more than half empty.

This movie was good. This is Smith's best performance. The CGI was terrible. The script was also a little flawed. The dog was awesome! Could have been a lot better. This movie is worth it to see for the performance by Will Smith and the destroyed and abandoned New York.

Considering the kind of rubbish Will Smith makes these days, this was surprisingly good. The whole "army of monsters" thing has been done various times before, and better, but the first half of the film with Smith as the only character in Manhattan, was actually not boring at all. The plot was fairly silly, but tried to explain itself with plausible reasons rather than just gaping holes. And I like a film where the production designers, set dressers and props team are given such a huge task.

Quite good first half dealing with isolation and the mental strain (and a particularly good scene in a darkened area) leads to a braindead actioner with horrible CGI-ed creatures that had the yahoos in my theatre clapping their hands. After the first 40 minutes or so, it becomes a very "safe" film that doesn't take risks and is as bland as oatmeal (just like Americans love). Really not worth your ten dollars, but recommend at least giving it a look on video or on TV.

I liked Will Smith, but the empty streets schtick was done better in 28 Days Later. The monsters looked retarded and the plot totally loses it near the end. This is due to changing what is in fact quite a profound ending in the book and this film's original ending (check the DVD). It wouldn't have made it a classic by any means but would've greatly improved it.

hey what's up DEAD ON CRITICKER SCORE - i agree with the general consensus, this movie starts out great and will smith delivers way more to the role than the film asks of him (will smith is a great actor, i said it), and then suddenly i guess they lost the last twenty pages of the script and bring in some stupid latina bitch and her white kid and all of this buildup concerning the newfound intelligence of the creatures is thrown out the window and there are some explosions and bad cgi

I'm echoing the sentiments of the majority of reviews I've read. The first hour of just Will Smith - who gives arguably the best performance of his career - and his dog (Dogs can give kickass performances too? Who knew?) is beautiful, awesome and effective. The creatures' introduction is intensely horrifying. Then, cue the Hollywood clichés and the movie just takes a fucking nosedive and ultimately you're left feeling disappointed thinking about the wasted potential. Also, the CGI is painful.

Will Smith knows his movie star brand; special effects, a message of harmony, and a focus on himself rather than the director. This film attempts all of the above, at times to the detriment of the action/horror mood. I'm not sure he pulls off playing the most brilliant man alive and the Bob Marley soundtrack is forced. But the startling scares & NYC desolation are great. It's only real faults are that it's embraced by anti-vaxxers and ditching the original scripted ending. Still, recommended.

I wasn't as let down as everyone else seems to be. Yeah, when the girl and kid show up the movie starts to play safe, but I think the good outweighs the bad. I love the desolation of New York, and Will Smith is in top form (I'm not sure I've ever seen such good chemistry in a human/dog duo... seriously). The movie isn't completely devoid of technical or intellectual merit. I enjoyed it.

There were a couple decently funny parts (especially the look on Smith's face when he killed his dog) and Will Smith did a pretty good job; however, they took the real ending and fucking butchered it like a goat at a satanic blood rite. There is actual meaning in the title that was lost and made to just mean Will Smith is pretty cool. I originally had this at a 50 but realized how pissed I was that they changed the ending to that piece of shit. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be shot

The first half of I am Legend is brilliant. You're faced with a character who has been completely alone for literally three years straight and it has worn him down so thin that it makes you almost depressed for his character. The tension between Neville and the others is great, it's only just when things start to piece together at about the halfway point that it starts getting a little ridiculous and almost cheesy. It's a spectacle to see New York abandoned, but don't expect too much.

Unsurprisingly for a film where Smith and a dog steal the show, there's little to be had beyond the initial experience. With an interesting premise and great introduction to the world of disaster-stricken NY it starts off very well and you really get the sense of how it must be to be alone in a dangerous and changing environment. However the instant the dog leaves the screen, the movie quickly deteriorated until the diabolical ending sequence which served as nothing more than a slap in the face.

Flat out Will Smith is very good. You really get a sense that his character has been alone for three years without any companionship besides his dog and his performance is certainly the highlight of the film. The downside is all the CGI. It's in your face and looks like CGI. The best scares are the subtle ones but quickly the film turns into "let's have hundreds of these zombie-vampires that's scary!" And it's not. Also the original ending was just garbage. The new one's slightly better.

Smith turns in a tour-de-force performance in what is essentially a one-man show. Unfortunately, the movie falls apart around him. A taut and compelling first half is wasted by a shaky second half and an absolutely terrible ending that beats you over the head with its preachy religious message. It's a shame, because it really seems like there is a very very good movie hidden in here somewhere, but this one is content to simply scratch the surface and move on. Still, it's visually memorable.

As others have said, the best part of the film is the more tense first half, and for me the real star here is the great New York City location shooting. Once it turns into an action movie it's kind of trite. Also, Shrek. What the hell.

The CG monsters are one thing. Having read the book and knowing the subtle changes that destroy the power of the story ruins everything. It gets points for filming one of the saddest death scenes in recent history. Will Smith (whom I despise) plays it perfectly when it's time to put down his best friend.

It has some awesome scenes. And Will Smith does really pull it off which is kinda impressive seeing as he's playing nearly the only character in the movie. However, it's been made in a far too Hollywood-ish manner. It's full of cliches, it's rather overdone (particularly the ending) and really quite predictable. Where are the plot twists? They aren't, apparently. Overall a decent film and lots of entertaining scenes. But you can still do better. Oh, and the CGI is horrid.

A cautionary tale about the idiocy of focus groups. Briefly alludes to the book's original ending in a piece of wayward foreshadowing inexplicably left in the final cut, but then delivers a bland, easily palatable cop out in its place. I pity Will Smith, whose performance is wonderful. He deserves better.

I almost always enjoy the post-apocalypse and this is one of the better renditions that I have seen. The story is very stripped-down and works, at least for a while. With a brilliant first half, I was totally expecting to rank this higher! Yet, with every passing minute from that point, the story and CGI got dumber and proceeded to cross the line into allegoric garbage. The family is not acted well, but Will Smith definitely brought his A-game. Overall, if they kept the movie like the first half, this would have been Smith's classic, yet it was let down by poor CGI, a disappointing ending, and a mediocre supporting cast.

I loved most of the movie, about two thirds of it. However the last part of it reveals o plot twist that pretty much ruins what was achieved until then; if I were to rate it solely on its latter part, I wouldn't give it more than a 50. The only constant thing is that Will Smith is great. Spoiler: when you watch the movie it could be fun to turn off the movie when the chick/kid combo arrives and imagine what you would've done with the story. I kind of liked this movie. Will Smith is good, the mood is right kind of, crappy New York is fine. But the latter half of the film is pure balloony. Tension grows nicely, until he really meets the infected people. The zombie part was mindless action, and worst kind of CGI. Comes out of the gate surprisingly well; I was actually quite taken aback by how effective it was in the first half. It's very tense, but quiet, slow tension, with creepy, well-composed sequences (despite the already-poorly-aged CGI); when he goes into the dark building, and then when he gets caught in the trap, god damn, really had me on edge. Really well made post-apocalyptic flick. The effects and CG are quite seamless and there is lots of good action and tension throughout the film. Smith is good as the lead character, even with no one to talk to for a good chunk of the movie. Having also seen The Omega Man which this is almost a copy of, this one is an improvement. The film never reaches its whole potential, but this one's disarming and unexpected, even when its zombies are a band of unconvincing CG clones. The plot is a replicant of "28 Days Later" and others, but is worth seeing because Will Smith is right on the money, turning in a showcase performance and delivering an unexpected and emotional apocalyptic drama unlike his previous blockbusters that rely on fireballs and one-liners. See the alternate ending cut - it's easily the superior version.

A somewhat interesting premise is unfortunately but unsurprisingly sacrificed at the altar of what is called "action". I Am Legend overcomes questionable special effects and succeeds largely on the strength of Will Smith's mesmerizing performance.

An excellent first two-thirds clash with a mediocre and forgettable last-third. Will Smith is great in the role, providing a complex and believable character, and the earlier action scenes are exciting, but the movie, as it goes on, grows old and loses steam when it tries to go all action in the last half hour.

Will Smith is incredible, the direction and pacing is terrific, but everything else is underwhelming, particularly the "zombies".

I wish there was more to this movie than "Will Smith is the last man on earth watch him fight vamp-zombies," and more "they are actually people and he is the real monster."

An insult to the name. This movie has almost nothing to do with the original book, and was highly disappointing.

As a movie it is decent; fairly entertaining. Will Smith is a great actor and he does bring a lot to this. However as an adaptation on the book it is very poor. I can understand having to miss parts of the story out to make it work as a film and I can live with that. Changing the story and completely missing the point of the book in order to make more money is something which I can't live with. As somebody who loved the book I came away from this movie feeling very disappointed.

A nice concept with a brilliant actor, but somehow slow moving. I expected a faster pace and more innovation by the protagonist for his survival. Though the adaptation is from an excellent book, the final product lacks something which I cannot place my finger on.

a bit of a letdown, in spite of an excellent first half.
