I wouldn't call this a documentary, since the dude could be making all this stuff up, but it is a pretty funny essay about consciously assessing and dealing with an addiction. Caveh Zahedi has a lot of fun playing with documentary tropes, like the unnecessary voice-over, and structures the movie in a labrynthian way that provides a nice moment at the end after you've emerged from the maze.

I had to check the year date to ensure it was shot on a frequently out of focused hd cam and not a smart phone. Zahedi explains how he fucks up several relationships during an alleged 10 year sex addiction. Powered by philosophy, vague justification and swinger logic we see what pushes this man away from monogamy and towards some non-traditional relationship stories. I didn't mind the tongue in cheek over-playing of the male sex scene & the ending was a nice touch, pending relapse.

Zahedi's socially awkward idiosyncrasies and tendencies to needlessly comment on the similarities between his life and the film's production is the sort of ADHD, Woody Allen-esque instability that might make some people completely loathe Zahedi, ergo this film. But not me, I was real smitten by the man and his problems and his good-intentions-but-negative-consequences-nonetheless approaches to fixing himself and his relationships. As the title suggests, it's a very honest performative doco.

Despite a good title and some notable nude scenes and beautiful models this movie is awkward, boring and pathetic. He is smug, self absorbed and clueless. His approach to telling the story makes him seem simple minded and naive. This film was obviously made to satisfy his own need for a cathartic explanation for all the miserable selfish choices he's made throughout his life. I hope I never see another film by this hack.

Zahedi's autobiographical essay film melds diverse elements together into a cohesive whole of a film. Using traditional filming, old home movies, still photos, animation, and even darkness, Zahedi varies the look almost as much as he introduces variance into the telling of his story--constantly following rabbit trails. But his thoughtfulness, vulnerability, and honesty about his journey make this sad, comic, and ultimately hopeful film an enjoyable and meaningful experience.

This film is frankly trash being spun as trash being edgy. Caveh does many theatrical asides trying to say how clever his film is "ironically" which just makes him seem lamentable. He may have improved the movie If he had recast himself, like he did with the rest of the players of his life, but as it is the story of an addict from his own perspective it manages to still be interesting. Perhaps even gaining something from the tragedy of the film itself.

As a fan of the unusual, Zahedi's compulsion(?) to share the most socially taboo aspects of his lust interested me. & although his 1st person talking-head approach could easily be boring, his tangents & digressions usually keep things engaging w/ humor or a revealing new complication. If there's a drawback, it's Zahedi himself: he's 1 of those guys who intellectualizes reasons to gratify his id. It's an immature/self-serving world view. He also never explains how he subsidized all his freedoms.

Overlong execution of what could have been an outstanding short subject - the first half hour is the best, as Zahedi ties himself up in increasingly hilarious knots explaining the genesis and construction of his "documentary"; unfortunately he can't sustain the film to feature length, meandering his way through an overlong and repetitive narrative for the remaining two acts. Keeps you on your toes because it's hard to know how much of Zahedi's "plight" you are meant to take seriously.

Not a movie I'd watch again unless needed a reference or comparison to something or other. Do recommend it for movie fans that want to check out something a little risqué but not over-the-top.

hilarious, filthy... it's hard to look away as he glares down the barrel of the camera, careering from one disastrous relationship to another with a distinct turn of the century beam_me_up_softboi inflection. something for the perverted inner-north/west non-monogamists/sex-pests in your life.
