As a message it's relatively intriguing and succeeds, but as a movie it leaves a bit to be desired. It's a cool premise even if it reminded me of different, better movies, but it deserves more. The script needed work because it didn't accomplish being a dark comedy, though some of the horror elements worked. The pacing was off and it was hard to connect with what was going on. Horvat wasn't up to the task as an actress, nor were some of the other people involved.

The US version of Deerskin is hit and miss. Horvat's satire of the indie filmmakerscape by way of American Psycho makes some good points, but often gets so busy winking at the audience that it - ironically - never lands the authenticity the in-story version of her looks for. Still, it's a good idea, and it's not like I didn't laugh more than once.

That it thinks it's sophisticated only serves to underscore its drab pointlessness.

Starts with an interesting premise, that the cut-throat film-world may indeed breed people willing to cut throats to survive, but does nothing to develop it; odd mix of BLAIR WITCH found footage and a more “conventional” film-making style creates a disorienting and annoying whiplashing effect, further highlighting Horvat’s laboured performance. The big set pieces are consistently muffled by the film’s inability to set a tone – is it supposed to be “real” or taken as absurdist black comedy?
