It's a testament to Garland's overwhelming screen presence (even in her tragic later years) that she makes a fairly middling, unexceptional drama as riveting as it is, by the sheer forcefulness of her performance (musically and otherwise). Certain autobiographical resonances in the tale of an over-the-hill singer attempting to make peace with her family also help. Bogarde and remaining cast performances are fine, but this is Garland's show all the way.
