Wry tale of the struggle to eke out an existence in the nihilistic desert of American (dis)society, mostly underplayed until the frenzy of violence that seems to have become a kind of necessity or fetish (and so also a cliché) in movies of this type, possibly for marketing reasons. Sticks with textbook narrative formula ("arc", as the professionals say), but the interest and pleasure lie in the minor details, which are pitched a little above the generic level (except for the frenzy bit).

After being burglarized, a woman teams up with her weirdo neighbor to track down the thieves. Things quickly spiral out of control in a very Coens-esque way, filled with moments of quirky humor and extreme violence. While there were definitely a few instances where the film reaches too hard for the quirk to the point where it becomes strained, it's overall pretty funny and enjoyable. A solid directorial debut for Macon Blair, I look forward to seeing more from him.

Has a few quite funny parts. That said, I'm becoming less and less shocked by indies mirroring their dull pallets and meek characters with hyper-violence and blood that is such a dark shade of red it's almost black. Still, if you look at the font used in the poster and aren't immediately put off, then you'll probably enjoy this well enough.

Macon Blair macons a pretty good movie that plops realistically average people into a revenge plot that wants violence to seem violent. I didn't love this the way I did Blue Ruin but it is a good time.

The first half is quite intriguing in its un-dramatized realism, but, in the end, it ends feeling like some sloppy marriage of the Coen Brothers and a post-Juno Juno. I really wanted to like this movie, but there's something essential missing here and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Like a snowball released at the top of a hill overlooking Dante's hell (the cold one, not the hot one), this film starts off small and slow, picking up both speed and size (in the form of gravel and roadkill) along the way, until it eventually grows to a massive ice boulder crushing everything in its path before finally smashing into a lemonade stand, shattering it and the ball into 1000 tiny splinters that somehow get lodged in your soul for all eternity. So yeah, it's a pretty good movie.

A clever little film that plays out in subdued, pretty cinematography and dry dialogue, surprising the viewer with twists, violence, and emotion but never becoming incoherent.

Pretty good directorial debut by Macon Blair who I've enjoyed as an actor up to this point. It's a dark comedy that features heightened slightly bizarre characters that experience some extreme, almost random, violence. If that's up your alley then it's worth the watch. The acting by Lynskey is quite good, and Elijah Wood has being the weird yet believable supporting character down.

very influenced by the Coens. also very solid. also, I think a lot about Elijah Wood in comparison to everyone he stands next to because I stood next to him once. not bragging, I just have a frame of reference now.

Blue Ruin as done by someone who's watched more than a few Coen Bros movies. The setting is beautifully detailed, Lynskey is perfect, others are spotty (Wood's character seems to be from an earlier and much more precious version of the script), ending is slightly hokey, but what the hell. It works.

A strong yet subtle central character study (the detailed visual storytelling is perfect-see the paralleled grocery store scenes) of the relatable Ruth (with quirky Tony) is brilliantly joined by a blackly comedic and shockingly violent crime drama (with genuinely creepy baddies) excellently edited and scored. Its intriguing underlying discussion of revenge and justice doesn't wrap up in a satisfying manner though, as exemplified by the too-easy epilogue to the devastatingly bloody climax.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore is almost a promise to viewers as Lynskey's character encounters despicable character after despicable character. The comedy is inexorably linked to tragedy as Lynskey descends to the very depths that she despises from those around her. Lynskey carries the film with a grounded performance while Wood tags along providing quirky comedy. As an allegory for depression or even dissatisfaction, ultimately the film just doesn't leave that much of an impact.

It had some nice comedy, a great performance by Elijah Wood, and it was generally well-directed. But the story was pretty bland and needed something more to make it memorable.

A very forgettable movie, some characters where interesting but the set up and story didn't allow them to shine, also I didn't like how the tone of the movie changed so much that it seemed like a different genre from one half to the other.

This flick is written and directed by Macon Blair (who also has a small cameo), who has appeared in a trio of films from Jeremy Saulnier. That's a reasonable comparison. This is like "Blue Ruin" with a slightly lighter tone.

There's nothing really remarkable about this film, and it does tend to push the quirky angle a little too hard at times but both leads are quite agreeable, Christine Woods lights up the screen for a few minutes and the story progresses at a reasonable clip so it's certainly not a chore to sit through. It's a solid directorial debut from Blair, and I'd watch a second from him based on this because there's definitely potential here.

A well made movie that ultimately feels slow and dull for stretches. Lynskey and Wood do a good job with their roles, but other than the general theme of everyone being so shitty , there's just not a lot going on in this movie. I guess part of the problem was that most of the humor fell flat. The film either needed to lean into it's creepiness more, or find a way to inject more energy.

Unfunny besides the recovery of the laptop scene, the comedy is either too subtle or too blatant. The violence is miserable and it just degrades into the typical indie cliches at the end. Elijah Wood and his character is the sole bright spot in this.

There are certainly moments I enjoyed here, like recovering the laptop or the conversation Lynskey has with her pursuer at the end, and some of the violence worked for me because it was abrupt and loud, like this kind of violence should be. But in between these parts beat the heart of a fairly dull movie. The humour rarely clicked with me despite their best efforts. Good performances by Wood and Lynskey, also a good sense of atmosphere and directorial prowess for Blair/the cinematographer.

wow, this was a very strange film lol. there's like this stupid twee hipster millennial ironic ninja star nunchucks napoleon dynamite bullshit, and then toward the end there's just brutal Jeremy Saulnier-esque levels of violence. I don't really know what to make of this. **edit:** oh, Macon Blair is literally best friends with Jeremy Saulnier, go figure

Pretty decent entertainment in this deliberately ultra-quirky suburban revenge comedy-drama from first-timer Macon Blair (of Blue Ruin fame). The lead is a refreshingly ordinary morally-sound podgy woman; her sidekick is Elijah Wood's psychopathic introvert ninja. Their surprising destination is a bloodbath of revenge at a local crime family. Lots of unexpected elements and only the pacing is a tad slow. Plenty of potential, although this particular idea now feels thoroughly used up.

I liked this quite a bit but I felt like it left a little too much of its characters on the cutting room floor. I wanted to know way more about Lynskey and Wood. However, I did appreciate the unexplained, cult-y weirdness of the bad guys so maybe I'm just fickle.

There is no justice, life means nothing, everyone is an egocentric asshole. A woman tries to bring some justice in this world, some of the black & white morale of the fantasy world, some sense, but she is not that much less egocentric of the people she spite. We are egocentric because we all suffer. The answer is existentialist and escapist: find someone on the road with the same fantasy world in mind, and close yourself in it with the ones you love. A nice balance between gore and comedy.

Damn, this started soooooo amazingly good..! Really genius movie. But when the extreme violence began sadly the greatness declined a bit and the ending was pretty random and too easy/simple. That is just such a shame because the rest was so amazingly good.

Macon Blair's directorial debut has definite influences from his previous acting collaborations in chaotic films like Blue Ruin and Green Room. Here, the result is a lot more infused with dark comedy, although the results still are often brutally violent. The film is perfectly acted with a blend of awkwardness and tenderness and contains some surprising turns that make it feel fresh and energetic.

A realistic portrayal of a characters who become intertwined in a world that they deserve no part in, Lynskey and Wood are near perfect. Equal parts awkward, funny, dramatic and violent this film dives deep into the roles of people in our lives and in our every day functioning society. It turns convention on its head and steers clear of being predictable until the very moment it leans toward a predictable outcome rather than an emotional one. That's what hurt the most.

My kind of quirky black comedy. Something holds it back from being a total orgasmic experience, but you easily end up rooting for the the girl and her corny sidekick because they believe in their cause wholeheartedly! You can't let people just invade your home like that and let them get away with it! A lot of humor, a solid dose of violence and strong characters. Simply a good time!

I dislike movies that are based on 'everybody's an asshole' without any (or weak) sociological attempt at understanding why. They're in general disguised neolib propaganda. Yet, some very enjoyable moments in the first part mostly as these two random people team up in their silly quest. Unfortunately, the second part quickly becomes ridiculous, probably because, as a Netflix product, it has to feature a minimal amount of action, tension, blood and violence and superficial good/bad opposition.

From laugh out loud funny to shockingly violent, Macon Blair's directorial debut is a great time. Taking a page right out of his work in Blue Ruin, Blair slowly builds tension until a satisfyingly looney and sad crescendo. Along the way, we get Melanie Lynskey being wonderful (as per usual) and Elijah Wood getting inspiration from, what seems to be, Napoleon Dynamite.
