Unique and absurd, about philosophy and making fun of philosophy, great cast and great acting (especially Mark Wahlberg who is hilarious in this.) Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but in my opinion, a hilarious movie.

As a story where a lead questions why things happen the way they do, this was a much-needed comedy after 9/11. Similar to Three Kings (and its grounded take on American foreign policy), here David O. Russell tells a tale about the practical application of philosophy & existential concerns. But it isn't all a drag! There are some great jokes (especially Isabelle Huppert and Lily Tomlin) that had me smiling when I wasn't laughing. Highly recommended, endlessly quotable, and vastly overlooked.

Here we have a movie with the balls to be upfront, honest, and in your face with the fact that it is addressing philosophy. Folks who don't care about philosophy find this movie boring, and those who do care are just so above this elementary exercise. *adjusts monocle* That leaves the rest of us who feel that it accomplished its goal of being hilarious. Mark Wahlberg is at his best ever in this. Distraught and on the edge. Amusing and frightening at once.

Buddhism, nihilism, and existentialism collide in the minds of the central characters, with poignant and amusing results. In my mind at least, it's a familiar struggle, and well worth the time. Yes, other reviewer, this IS the stuff you discussed at 3 AM in college, but did you find an answer? Did you keep wondering, or did you forget the debate? Isn't this the same stuff that keeps us all up at 3 AM sometimes? Aren't these the most important questions we ever approach?

You have to follow along with the character's beliefs to get most of the jokes, but you have to also laugh at the characters, not with them. Since there isn't too much like this you really have to aquire it's taste as you watch it. A harder movie to really get.

In many ways a messy film that could have been very good considering the ensemble cast - Naomi Watts is the stand out - that has a certain synergy that holds the viewer's attention. It succeeds more as a comedy than as any sort of meaningful contemplation of what it is to be. Nevertheless, sufficiently amusing and interesting to form in my memory as a worthwhile film to watch.

I wouldn't say it's good but the dinner scene is fantastic - Wahlberg, who I usually can't stand besides Boogie Nights & The Departed, is the best thing about this. Obviously the leaked video where the director calls Lily Tomlin a cunt is a must see if you haven't already.

OK, yes, it was self-conscious and self-indulgent. But it's a fun idea, and the scene with Naomi Watts beating the floor with overalls was worth it. Jon Brion's soundtrack is good, and it's still better than most of the crap Hollywood puts out. So lighten up.

A bizarre film, I Heart Huckabees struggles between satirical deadpan and wacky romp, and would have been better had it commited to either. The movie works rides on the strength of it's cast (especially dustin hoffman) and a few truly funny scenes, but the comic timing is far off and the movie often seems as unsure as it's characters. The novelty of play with philosophy concepts like dolls also sets it apart, but the ending chooses to err toward comedy and ends with a chuckle and a thud.

This movie has wit and enormous heart. Still don't quite understand the pans. It's really a wonderful throwback to the freedom-loving cinema of the 60's and 70's, with suitable 90's irony and sarcasm thrown in for good measure. Probably Jude Law's best performance too!

An off-beat and visually creative film with some absolutely classic scenes and a brilliant performance from Mark Wahlberg (which, coupled with The Departed, gives me great hope for him as an actor). It's not without its flaws, but what works works so well that in the end, all is forgiven. I'd like to see this again, actually, if only to take in the glorious dinner table scene one more time.

The writer/director wants you to know just how deep he really his, but it's barely any deeper than that guy who watched The Matrix for the first time and wondered if this reality was real. Lots of navel-gazing and scenery-chewing; not so much in the way of cosmic revelations. If that was the point, it would be a scathing satire, but it's not.

This wasn’t bad, but it was a pretty strange experience having previously seen DOR’s later works, which are much more footed in reality than this movie for better or worse. A few odd (literally) instances aside (see the mud sex), it maintains a perfect balance between quirky existential comedy (the philosophy also nicely rejects the extremes) and relatable drama, as wildly memorable dialogue-packed scenes (see dinner at Steve's) craft numerous brilliant character arcs (Dawn's epiphany is hilarious; Schwartzman's on the lawn poignant), boosted by outstanding turns (see Law's face listening to the joke recordings; Wahlberg's petroleum rants). Nice soundtrack, too.

Certainly O. Russell's weirdest and most unique creation, although not his most successful. The satire of the 'existential industry' (for lack of a better term) is sharp and there are hilarious bits of oddball humor. However, the film comes off as an overtly quirky mess more often than not and, despite the occasionally interesting examination of the familiar Very Important Issues (love, universe, life meaning and the lot), there's too much silliness pervading the picture from excellence.

This isn't a film that will let you sit back and just be along for the ride. It wants you to participate and think along with its characters. It isn't quite as funny as one would expect, and it gets off to a slow start. Once it picks up, it really gets going. It has interesting characters, dialogue and themes, and it is engaging. The conflicting views that it presents allows you to question your own, while the numerous subplots and characters makes it a film you really have to pay attention to.

I thought this wasn't going to be very good, yet I found it surprisingly watchable. Perhaps it's because I took it as a bunch of weird characters floundering around, trying to figure out what philosophy they want to follow, rather than the movie preaching anything.
