[AIF 2019] The ending doesn't do a fantastic job of reconciling the protagonist's entitlement, but otherwise a very deeply human film. Clapin's musings on fate and love find a very appropriate outlet in the organic interactions between the two protagonists.

This left me disappointingly cold. I was never particularly convinced that the film’s central conceit enriched the story or its themes beyond providing a unique vehicle for its unconventional narrative structure. Some really nice touches here and there (loved the initial scene between the two main characters over the intercom), but take away the severed hand at the center of the movie and you’re left with a fairly unrelevatory examination of fate and freewill.

Thoughtful, reflective, and excellently animated and scored. A meditative, quiet film that is truly beautiful in its small moments. Even the thump of a heartbeat is too solid for this film; instead, it wanders in the loveliness of the brush of a fingertip.

I felt for the hand. This was quite a beautiful movie, particularly in two aspects: the animation and the music. Both are superb. Maybe without the hand this would seem like a lesser, more normal movie, but the hand is there so it counts. Watching it traverse the city was actually really exciting and emotional. It's just a shame that the non-hand stuff isn't quite as compelling, even if it is a fairly thoughtful reflection on fate, love, etc.

Would have been better as a short film about the hand.

While the hand stuff is mostly excellent and made me feel quite sad for it by the end, the same can't really be said for the other parts (get it?), even if it tries to tell us something moderately interesting about fate. Great animation, though.

Remove the gimmick of the hand, and this becomes just another early-00s film about an awkward guy and a quirky girl. Add that gimmick, and everything you hate about that plot gets brushed aside and it becomes kind of beautiful.

Beautifully animated with a script that reflects on hard concepts. But sadly the protagonist is neither seems to never grow, reflect, out of being anything besides an entitled "nice guy". But the movie seems to think the protagonist did grow and learn and thus Gabrielle, the female lead, becomes incredibly one note. Seriously disappointing such a well drawn and unique concept of a movie is wasted on a french neckbeard.

Besides the - admittedly rather unusual - addition of having a hand make its way around Paris, this is quite a basic story. It's pretty though, and the music works really well.

It's good, definitely. The first half I found especially strong, successfully 'subverting my expectations' in a good way (unlike certain other films *cough cough*). However the second half it treads into more familiar territory and that is where it lost me a bit. A shame because the first half was really special. Still a good film, beautifully animated with a good use of the soundtrack. Would have benefited from a stronger core plot / more original romance plot. Worth a watch.

Dan Levy soundtrack was beautiful. The movie is a mirage of magical scenes. It's less than 1 and a half hours yet it feels like a two hour movie. The ending seems anticlimactic and inauspicious to the viewer who focuses on the relationship between Gabrielle and Naoufel.-*SPOILERS*- I think it's easier appreciated when you keep Naoufel's perspective in mind. He just lost his entire hand. Although nothing was technically resolved between Naoufel & Gabrielle, he was able to "elude destiny

This is an unusual and experimental movie, but it is easy to follow and get involved in. It will keep you at the edge of your seat in many different ways and for many different reasons. The harmony between the two different stories is not completely seamless, but they are each very strong on their own, and the whole is satisfying.

If I Lost My Body was simply the tale of a hand searching for its owner, it would be in the running for my favorite animated film ever made. An unlikable and unengaging protagonist and love story put a severe drag on the film.

This is a movie that absolutely had to be animated, but doesn't feel like what you might expect an animated movie to be. The audience ends up being treated with a ridiculously good blend of Low Fantasy and Coming-of-Age Drama. The realistic parts just feel so realistic. The animation is refreshing and beautiful. The score is absolutely wonderful. If you're willing to go with the premise then you'll be rewarded with a mostly delightful but somewhat emotional viewing experience.

I was afraid this movie would have a massic Manic Pixie Dream Girl Problem... and then it didn't. It was marvelous.

"Oh-so-surreal" existential, sensorial journey about a hand trying to get back to its body that easily slips into a traditional, basic narrative when it wants -- a trauma story about an accident, sweet flashbacks from childhood and so on. Animation seems fresh and good-looking, but I just couldn't care less about the story.

there are some genuine gems in this one. the diaphone sequence, the little boy recording sounds, the memories of the child growing up. it somewhat wallows in its pity, but this is what it is, a melancholic, surreal movie. excellent soundtrack also add to the experience.

English dub: Fairly standard (but poignant) stalker-boy meets girl plot is invigorated by the competing, seemingly unrelated narrative of the plight of a disembodied hand, brilliantly and imaginatively executed (the rat scene might be one of the best set pieces in recent memory). Stylishly and creatively animated with fine vocal work from Patel and Shawkat, this cartoon for big kids ultimately packs a significant emotional punch once it reaches its climax. Great fun.

I thought this deserved the Oscar. Fascinating and intriguing, with luscious animation that gives this unique and surreal story so much life. You will need to suspend "reality" but the fact that it's an animation should help with that. It's a more adult and nuanced animation film, and might not be for kids, but it's just a beautifully made piece of work that deserves to be recognised.

While its original premise does feel a bit gimmick at times, the creativeness of the execution can't be denied. Meanwhile it is intersected with flashbacks about the life of Naoufel. This essentially bold down to a clichéd, although likeable story about a traumatized awkward boy meeting a quirky girl. Disappointingly the two storylines don't come together as well in the end as they could have. That it did leave me with a big emotional impact is thanks to the amazing melancholic score.

Besides the bad, unfitting music that ruined a lot of the potential, a great, deep experience, even though not fully realized. But the sensitivity of the filmmaker and is gentle soul break through many scenes. A must watch

great soundtrack and beautiful animation, including some excellent transitions. has a very strong command of imagery and uses it to connect its themes. altogether a snippet of loss, fighting to stay alive, and fate. unfortunately the ending is pretty disappointing and doesn't really pull the two plot threads together

Naoufel: "We think that we can, but we can't. It's an illusion. Unless we do... Something completely unpredictable and irrational. It's the only way to conjure the spell for good."

It's super non-linear, as the adventures of a severed hand foreshadow an injury that is yet to happen in the story running parallel; and sprinkled across both narratives are black and white segments depicting early memories that both hand and body share - often, but not always, portrayed with an emphasis on touch and sensation. I loved every second until the end, at which point I realised I had no idea what the film was saying. Maybe the themes would be clearer for me on a rewatch.
