I Married a Shadow

Ebert inexplicably gave this four stars, finding some sort of tenderness and character in these hoary, soapy plot points and scenes that manage to just find the wrong, i.e. amateur tone each time out. Directed by some hack in an artlessness that could be mistaken for artfulness in the Rohmer/Chabrol manner, it jumps off the tracks after the train does the same. Anyway, the film has been forgotten.

Pregnant & abandoned by her lover, a woman boards a train, bereft of hope. She meets a happily married couple & the pregnant wife offers her a seat. The train is derailed & she wakes up to find herself mistaken for the other pregnant woman. Her wealthy "in-laws" invite her & her baby son to live with them. She loves her new found family but is wracked with guilt over her inadvertent imposture as their daughter-in-law. A French adaption of a romantic suspense novel by Cornell Woolrich.
