I bet the director said something like this before starting Secret Lives (1937): "Horney my dear, you try and be Marlene Dietrich, and I'll shoot you like I was Josef von Sternberg." It's from a copycat aspect this British film is most fascinating. Lacks completely the suspense needed for a spy movie, but there are a lot of mirror images of Dietrich/Sternberg that works nicely for Horney/Gréville. Heavy use of shadows, angles and other effects. Something very Noir/Expressionistic about it.
