Hackman plays a New York professor who wants a change in his life, and plans to get married to his girlfriend and move to California. His mother understands his need to get away, but warns him that moving so far away could be hard on his father. Just before the wedding, the mother dies. Hackman's sister (who has been disowned by their father for marrying a Jewish man) advises him to live his own life, and not let himself be controlled by their father. (imdb)

Excellent, timeless study of attachment and epistemic trust. It uses filmingtechniques that haven't been standardized since then which surprises me because they are quite effective, for example the scene that he remembers fragments of his father that we just witnessed. Also the elderyhome-scene is great - it seems to be a social critique but that's irrelevant, the point of the scene is to reinforce the psychological prison the son is in. Hackman nails it in maybe his most complex role.

I refer to Karlson's criticker review on here. Can't add much, but yes Gene Hackman gets every expression right and reconfirms his legendary status as one of the very best. The music is beautiful, almost Morricone-like, the psychology timeless and completely zero'd in on the subtleties. The ending with the freeze frame and voiceover nearly had me in tears because i thought it was such an amazing cinematic decision and that's something that makes me so happy

"Death ends a life. But it does not end a relationship." This film takes that unadorned reality and exercises it to make a moving, if slushy, account about blood relations, living and dying, and all the words that go unheard.

The horror movie music when he goes to the nursing home is hilarious.
