A terribly boring movie that is in no way above average. It makes no effort to make the characters relate-able, and it simply takes too much effort to care about them at all. This movie has little plot development and that which does occur is boring.

It's like one of those family epics I love but there's not enough conflict here so it just becomes quite boring given the runtime. I shouldn't have to feel like I was watching the kids grow up in real time. The payoff is minimal too---mostly minor slice of life problems. Fav scene: the uncle dying was sad and relatable.

Is gooood, but not really much more than that. Decent performances, decent directing, reasonably interesting scenes, but nothing that really stands out and absolutely no reason why it should be well over two hours long.

Viewed February 5, 2021. Stevens going for McCarey-style naturalism, but his grand visual style gives these realistic episodes a sense of worldly importance. Sometimes boring, but often extremely moving. It also has by far the most effective singing scene of Irene Dunne's career.

Dunne's performance is very moving, and the supporting cast--particularly Cedric Hardwicke and Oscar Homolka--is also fine. Steven's slow direction gives the whole a dignity and sweetness that few directors are capable of.

A tad saccharine, but lovely. Being of Norwegian descent, I had heard about this movie for years before finally seeing it, and it was actually not a disappointment.

A family portrait come to life--has many satisfying pay-offs.

This story doesn't have anything specific to say, but it's the simply ordinary life for a immigrant family in America. This particular one set among a Norwegian settlement in small town with Irene Dunne being the center of the family speaking in broken English. For a Norwegian like myself, it was a interesting premise, but it ultimately tells the usual hardship among foreigners to a new country, with the main focus being a mother being a very typical loving mother.
