Fun little romp from Bava; more crime than horror but fun.

In many ways this feels like a test run for "Black Sunday" and while not as good, it still provides a lot of moody cinematography and atmosphere for fans of Gothic horror.

When we're not in creepy, cluttered cobwebbed chambers, we're sat down at a table or a desk and in static moments characters dump exposition. As soon as we move away from style, we're dumped into a slow-moving half-baked noir. Mario Bava's first(ish) unofficial directing credit is a decent enough B-movie. A showcase of his style might have given it enough for a general recommend, but the imbalance in stagey, talky scenes relegates it to only a recommended for Bava completionists.

A fun little vampire movie with good black and white visuals. Other than the aging effect there's not a lot that stands out but no major flaws either.

Surprisingly dull. A VERY VERY poor outing from the Charlie Parker of Italian genre flicks.

Very formulaic but workable mix of gothic horror and detective thriller. A bit clumsy plotting and rushed story but it's snappy and manages not to fall apart. Made enjoyable by the handsomely dressed and very well shot visuals (unsurprising with Bava behind the lens). Kind of a prologue for the golden age of Italian horror.

Bava getting his feet wet. The gothic scenes are gorgeous and atmospheric but the investigator scenes can get dry and muddle the hypnotic effect he would later perfect in the 60s and 70s.

Great sets and set designs with some really nice cinematography. The ending was a but weak and felt rushed.

Directed by Freda and completed by Bava, this early Italian 'talkie' noir/horror is worth a look for genre enthusiasts and especially Bava fans who are interested in a preview of the techniques he would later refine and use to better effect in Black Sunday.
