I think it's a very interesting movie. If what you're looking for is cinematography and art-house, shots are fantastic. You can see beauty of nature and the fascinating side of the camera in every scene. Although I love loneliness themed movies, i don't think the plot of Ich war zuhause, aber is compact and deep enough. Synopsis was very promising but Schanelec's handling doesn't impress you enough. If i didn't have huge if's, my rating would have been much higher because i love slow-tempo but..

Returning to mother nature is our existential certainty. Loss and tragedy carry on into our altering views of the art and society that surrounds us. It is a sad but ultimate realization that we feel a desolate loneliness when we come to a philosophical conclusion on our truth.

I kinda like the whole philosophic and existential weight surrounding every gesture and movement and dialogue, but to me the performatic material never fits the bigger picture. Provoking, poignant but not entirely rewarding as I thought it would be.

An honest, uncompromising study of our current political & aesthetic predicament. Can art be a remedy for the instability and precarity of our lives, threatened by loss, unemployment, violence, tragedy and death? If things escape the frame, how can a director bear witness to anything, let alone be authentic & creative? The mother, who says that we don't live in a forest, but takes refuge in the forest, cause maybe only a donkey can witness the truth, while art is a lie and false consolation.
