I Will Follow

Looking back on Ava DuVernay's first movie (a late aughts indie) should be cool. But there isn't enough of a plot to propel things and as a character study it is a bit muted. Overall, it feels like a Tyler Perry film minus the histrionics and Christian morality tale. Also, the constant pop culture references are bad--especially the horrendous two minute Nas vs. Jay-Z debate. The information can be muddled and the emotional ending doesn't land. Recommended only if you're a huge fan of hers.

Kind of a generic Sundance drama. Disappointing given how much I loved Selma, but it's her first film so no marks against DuVernay. Clearly heartfelt, but couldn't get into the groove of it. Typical family drama with some hokey dialogue about U2 and Michael Jackson.
