Idiot's Delight

Shearer should've been replaced by Garbo and this woulda been better. The American ending is prob the shittiest thing I'd seen and makes not sense w/r/t the story so glad I saw the international ending.

Interesting but quite unsuccessful film version of a highly artificial play which had been carried off superbly by the Lunts but was now somewhat less well cast, though it did represent an early Hollywood challenge to Hitler. The flagwaving in fact made it more than a little boring.

Incredibly, Gable sings and dances through "Puttin' on the Ritz," the film's big highlight.

Idiot's Delight (1939) is bizarre in many ways. Feels so random at every turn, but there is a lovely feel of anarchy about it. Almost as if they picked two movies and sliced them together. One a American showbiz movie, the other a European war film. Doesn't mix, but it's intriguing to watch the deliberate disaster! Clark Gable dances! The only time he does that! Norma Shearer has a disgusting Russian accent and is all ravishing trying to be Garbo! A strange movie, this has a special appeal.
