Not a very good film, or a very good date movie. Still got a Blowjob after seeing it though from my now ex-girl.

I didn't turn it off, so it barely passes, but there's nothing great about this film. Amanda Peet is disturbingly thin. Claire Danes is surprisingly hot. The Culkin kid plays another Holden Caufield lookalike, which immediately downgrades the experience.

Otherwise known as Culkin in the Rye. Sorry, whenever I see one of these movies about spoiled, aimless, unhappy New York prep school kids, I think of Salinger. Lots of funny lines, but ultimately unsatisfying. Igby is likeable, but unsympathetic.

Catcher in the Rye? Nah, it's just 2 hours of 'poor little rich kid can;t find his place in the world because he's too good for the rest of us'. I hated everyone in this film, except for Jeff Goldblum, but I'm always happy to see him whatever he's doing because he's Jeff Goldblum, and Jeff Goldblum is awesome.

What's the point of any of this? Such gratuitous sense of entitlement spread across so many characters leads to an absolute inability to suspend disbelief. Terming it 'a modern day Catcher in the Rye' is a misleading descriptor at best.

It really is the closest thing we'll see to a Catcher in the Rye movie so long as Salinger is alive. If you like Catcher in the Rye, you'll like this movie, if you thought Holden was a whiny little bitch who needs to grow up, you'll think the same thing of Igby Goes Down.

By the time the credits rolled, I felt a bit empty and a bit cheated that I wasted my time and energy trying to find something to be interested in or entertained by.

This movie started like a cheap Ferris Bueller's Day Off tryout. I haven't read The Catcher in the Rye though. Only reason to see this flick was Claire Danes, but don't get me wrong. Even she did not have a good role to play. And maybe some scenes with Bill Pullman. Otherwise as wasted time as Igby's.

It's such a solid study of adolescence and rebellion, with a protagonist you're rooting for, even as he destroys himself. Kieran Culkin needs to make more films, he's captivating on screen. Go see it before you die.

Trite at times, and the music is just unmentionably bad, but the dialogue is screwball snappy, and the editing is energetic and beautifully timed. The actors are quite good too. Too bad Steers took a nose-dive after this and hasn't made anything of note since.

K.Culkin is great in this dark'ish coming-of-age story, the rest of the cast and script are more uneven - and it also feels a bit too heavy-handed overall to quite reach its potential. *Preview*: #12#, re-3*, story, reviews, (cast), oldies(2), R2 }*{ #00s(m)#, reviews, story.

On the surface there's a lot to hate about this one. Almost every character is a snobby and pompous ass, and it tries way too hard to be like Catcher in the Rye at times, but I still loved the cynical wit, and I respected the irony of the emotional ending. I'd say it's definetly worth checking out.

Pretty good dark comedy, feels like a darker version of a Wes Anderson movie. The dialogue is great, and Kieran Culkin delivers it well. Jeff Goldblum is awesome like he always is, the rest of the cast is really good too. Usually I don't really like these quirky dysfunctional family movies, but this one was decent.

Now THAT is a dysfunctional family. For a barely-pubescent kid, Igby sure gets a lot of grown-up pussy (including one that goes on to fuck his brother later the same day). Very dark and frequently very funny.

The comparison's to Catcher in the Rye are warranted, but Igby Goes Down doesn't as successfully let you into the titular character's head. The dialogue is acerbic, and comes across as amusing half the time, but the characters are rarely sympathetic. While we're exposed to Holden's views on every subject under the sun, Igby doesn't really have any. The cast and acting are great, the the film just never went beyond the pretentious premise for it to work for me.

It's good, quite pretentious but enjoyable nonetheless. All actors are solid, the music is great (this genre isn't romance BTW, just noticed it). As others have said, the closest to an adaptation of Catcher in the Rye. Worth a watch, even just one.

Top badass moment? Realising I've not read Catcher in the Rye. A 'poor-little-rich-boy' with crappy parents, who’s far more like the pretentious, New York socialites he’s surrounded by than he thinks, manages to attract older women, all to a soundtrack of some of the worst indie rock the start of the Millennium had to offer. I wasn’t the least bit sorry when Jeff gives him a slap. It’s so much easier to be miserable and rebellious when you have money. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

I hear this film being described as similar to Catcher in the Rye all of the time. I'm not really sure why, aside from having a snotty, subversive rich male protagonist. Culkin still manages to be relatively likeable. He actually has a great screen presence, although usually he's relegated to supporting roles. The film is definitely worth watching.

First-time writer and director Steers, nephew of Gore Vidal, shows off a cold-blooded, waspy, New Yorky wit -- and "shows off" is very much the verb -- which arouses occasional admiration and infrequent mirth. At least he distributes the rhinestones democratically among the mixed-nuts ensemble. At the same time, there's something monotonous about it all.

Burr Steers is probably not much of screenwriter, however this movie is brilliantly done. I like these kind of movies where basically nothing happens and on other hand happens a lot. Thats life. And thats also Igby's life. Wonderful performance by Culkin and Philippe.
