A political thriller that's shot like a music video, with oodles of style. But the plot and web of characters is far, far too complicated for someone who doesn't already know the ins and outs of Italian politics in the 90s.

Good but somewhat disappointing as Andreotti's carreer covers 50 years of Italy's political history. The film chooses to make an unachieved portray of the man and to hint at some decisive moments. It made some harsh choices but I would have expected a bit deeper a film.

By turns expository and impressionistic, if not indeed expressionistic, this may be overly complex and detached, making for hard work for the uninitiated, but it contains so many fantastic images and shots, such great performances, so many good lines, and such a diverse and well-chosen soundtrack, that it is impossible not to enjoy the experience. If only political dramas were more frequently like this movie.

I loved this film. It was made with bad intentions, in the best tradition of Italian satire. It's very funny, highly entertaining, brilliantly acted and when it comes to films about national political cultures, this is a masterpiece.

It reminded me of the Bronson, another biopic released around the same time. They both lean towards the style rather than substance, and they both have great lead actors. Of course, Il Divo comes out as a clear winner, because it isn't pretentious and doesn't feel that pointless. It's just that it doesn't make much sense without prior knowledge about Italian political life.

The best part - it's in Italian, probably the funniest language in the world.

Full of delectable style but really hard to engage with as a dumb American with limited Italian historical or cultural context.

Stylish biopic and satire that is entertaining throughout but never really seems to achieve much, a fact that has its good and bad points. Cliches are few and far between, but source knowledge of the period and situation are needed for full appreciation.

Toni Servillo as a fizzy water drinking Nosferatu. My score would be higher if I was at least 40 years old and Italian.

I like Sorrentino's style and admire his ambition, but the film never really came together for me. Fascinating misfire.

A very stylistic political biopic of a remarkably peculiar person. If you don't know much about Italian politics, it can take awhile to grasp all that's happening. Mix that with occasional unclear passages of time, and things can get a little muddled through the end of the second act, but the finale puts it all in focus. (And the denouement is particularly telling of the state of Italian politics of the times depicted.) Wonderful acting and characters as well.

I understand that, for a not-italian audience, it can be a well made but confusing film. For italians, there are more points of interest but also more issues. Points of interest: Andreotti, a puppet-master along 30 years of republic history, told like a pulp movie, avoiding the typical historic biopic. Issues: Andreotti was not really like that, it's like seeing a fictional character, a serious caricature, it's a strange feeling.

"A baroque high comedy of endemic corruption, Il Divo doesn't treat the early-'90s scandal that brought down Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti as a tragedy, thriller, or tale of long-delayed comeuppance, but with resigned wit and florid carica." - Bill Weber

Superb cinematography where almost every shot is beautifully balanced. I also loved how parts of the movie is little dialogue and mostly facial expressions and other parts where you are bombarded with the facts.

Puanlaması zor bir film. İtalyan olmadığım ve italyan siyasetine çok hakim olmadığım için filmin bir çok yerinde dikkatim dağldı.

Strange. I wonder what I'd think of it if I knew anything about the real Andreotti.

A stylish examination of Andreotti, a man whose true character is conveyed to the audience with subtly and detail by Servillo. The politics and double-dealings can be a bit confusing due to the large cast of characters, but Il Divo remains entertaining throughout, largely due to its inspired soundtrack

Il Divo is so pumped with testosterone, never slows down, always has something eye-popping, indeed often just distracting, to throw at us, and like a lot of masculine flaunting, it seems to compensate for a lack of something else.
