This is Antonioni only nearing his peak, the early sixties. But not only is his style already unmistakable, but this may also be the paradigmatic, most crystalline expression of Antonioni's thematic interests. A neorealism sparse in dialogue, with little expressed through words, but the long-shots, dwarfing man in relation to his environment, complete the picture. It is a dilapidated, decaying suburban backdrop selected to symbolize the disintegrating human relations in the foreground.

A really touching neo-realist story that shies away from the melodrama common in the genre to turn it into an existential character study. The lead strikes just the right tone of melancholy and each of the film's acts has it's own compelling drama that makes it work on its own while fitting into the larger whole.

Mesmerizing and beautiful. The character of Aldo was very appealing to me and despite the claim that some make of it being slow, I found it totally engaging and I was excited to see what happened to him next. Check it out.

Most often described as bridge between early neo-realist efforts and his later arthouse studies in anomie, Il Grido actually seems almost wholly the latter, the former being only window dressing for what must have been a pretty radical film in 1957. Antonioni's impeccable framing is already evident as are his characteristic longuers --though this time I was more atuned to them. I could watch Cochran drifting about the Po Valley with the piano score tinkling away for hours.

Found it difficult to overcome the sheer loathsomeness of Aldo.

02 nisan 2011, 30. ist film festivali, yonetmenin izledigim ilk filmi (beyoglu sinemasinda bir saat kadar izledim, daha sonra kendimi kotu hissedip ciktim ve filmi evde bitirdim) & filmin ozellikle finali, antonioni'nin sinif catismalariyla degil, modern bireyin kaybolmusluguyla ilgilendigine vurgu. sonraki sahnenin ne olacagini, olay akisinin dogrultusunu tahmin ettirmeyen bir film. http://www.eksisozluk.com/show.asp?id=15336794

Simple but well-crafted, slow and sparse yet involving, "Il Grido" is a modest success for Antonioni. Lacking staggering emotional moments, but consistently engrossing, piercing and full of pretty imagery, it's nowhere near earth-shattering but it's very worthwhile all the same.

Bringing the gap between neorealism and Antonioni's later, more existential works. A slow but engrossing tale, with a fine lead performance by noir actor Steve Cochran. The supporting cast are all very good as well, as is the melancholy score and stark cinematography. The desolate industrial landscapes look forward to Red Desert. While the film didn't blow me away, it felt like there was a lot going on under the surface that I perhaps didn't pick up on. A thoughtful and impressive work.

Even if not his best, the more time passes that more I find the movie unforgettable.

Second film by Antonioni that I saw. Not as stunning as La notte, a film about a heartbroken wanderer, distant from real world and people. Soundtrack is oddly cheerful and really sets a lighter tone of the film, even though it's greatly melancholic neo-realist picture. In this regard even black and white helps to cover all the mud, grey skies and poverty. A broken man in post-war world. A great film, slow and it makes you feel aimless. Thank you Mubi for making me discover Antonioni.

A kind of precursor to FIVE EASY PIECES, but somehow both colder and more sentimental, which is not necessarily a bad combination, but complaints that it is an almost inhuman work of a depressed mind are understandable. The range of characters is quite good, and there is something already quite Antonioniesque about the use of desolate spaces, but the isolation and lack of warmth make it an unpleasant place to visit for a couple of hours…or could the problem be that I’m already living there?

Solidly made, aggressively Italian Antonioni. It's a good film, though I can't say I really loved it that much. Some accomplished camerawork and well acted. The understated score is really effective.
