Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, is exiled to a small island for political reasons. On the island, the unemployed son of a poor fisherman is hired as an extra postman due to the huge increase in mail that this causes. Il Postino is to hand-deliver the celebrity's mail to him. Though poorly educated, the postman learns to love poetry and eventually befriends Neruda. Struggling to grow and express himself more fully, he suddenly falls in love and needs Neruda's help and guidance more than ever. (imdb)

Sweet natured, genial fable (with a beautiful soundtrack) mixes elements of CYRANO and PYGMALION, but makes its own mark thanks to Noiret and Troisi's lovely performances charting their gradually developing friendship; also incorporates a thoughtful consideration of the writing/creative process without ever feeling stodgy or “talky”. If the final act drags the story unnecessarily beyond its natural climax, the finale does provide an extra emotional kick, knowing Troisi's real-life fate.

Very nice although the last part is rushed. It feels as though it has something important to say on the theme of 'ignorance is bliss' but can't quite get it out. Is it being ambiguous like the poetry of Neruda? Or is it clumsily inexperienced like that of Ruoppolo? Either way I was left with a bit too much Richard Curtis to really love it.

The teacher-pupil stuff -- "What are metaphors?" etc. -- is palatably sweet, but the little-man stuff -- the ingenuous, self-abasing, sadsack, lovesick, lockjawed, calf-eyed hero -- presses on into cloying. And the ending is not just sadistic tearjerking, but dishonest. Once Neruda departs the island, there's no evidence that the hero does anything other than pine after the man, no evidence that he puts the lessons learned to good use, no evidence that he himself gets anything out of the waves

This feels very old fashioned and somewhat unrelatable but it drew my attention to the story of Pablo Neruda which is interesting.

A gentle and cute movie, funny too, about an ordinary postman who meets Pablo Neruda and asks him for love and life advice.

Not bad, but a bit simple. It gets away with it because it feels as a much older film, but if this was made today it probably would have been a pretty bad and boring film. However if you're in the mood for a film with an older feel and a bit of simple charm with slow pacing, this film might be for you.

Really enjoyed the first half, but the ending came out of no where and left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

One big huge shrug of a movie. It was quite charming and perfectly watchable, however also oversentimental (my ears!...my poor ears!), cloying and desperate to make you all teary eyed, particularly with it's seemingly out of the blue ending (which even I, who will cry at most sad films, did not mist up over). It had it's moments but was generally quite a lifeless affair.

I think this may have jumped a few points based on the fact that I happen to like Neruda. But the performances were there, though I didn't find the story particularly compelling.
