Il signor Max

A Cinderella-inspired "assumed identity" romantic comedy with even the minor characters lively and beautifully drawn, and moving acting across the board spearheaded by a phenomenal performance from young De Sica. The writing is very naturalistic for the 1930s, and delectable in its understated, deadpan humor.

Vittorio De Sica in another class romance. This time he's of the working class running a little newsstand. But he flirts with the rich, using his fathers savings to create a persona so that the rich would accept him. So therefore Gianni becomes Max. But while he tries to impress the rich, he falls for the servant girl Assia Noris. And it becomes a fun dual personality romance comedy where both leads show a great deal of charm, enhanced by Mario Casaleggio as the uncle. Delightful Italian film.
