The odd charming performance or witty exchange is weighed down by a constant, clumsy and overbearing narration stitched together from bits of simplified Balzac and dissonant contemporary allusions. Overall a conventional picture shot in a vaseline-heavy near-televisual way and acted unevenly (the protagonist's diction is gratingly post-Twitter) that doesn't quite manage to douse the flame of the novel.

One could think Balzac's nearly 200 years old depiction of power struggle and influence peddling in the news, culture and politics circles would be outdated. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have made much progress in those areas. Although some nods to current political issues may be a bit heavy handed, I was hooked all along

Comes across as a coy, but amusingly told tale that highlights in detail the mechanics of journalism and criticism, though (in its 150 min run-time) does fall into being reiterative occasionally. The film’s satire may seem razor sharp, but it comes across sensitively, never removing the humanity of any of the characters or the particular situations they end up in, no matter how unethical.
