I'm No Angel

I felt pretty much the same about this film as I did about She Done Him Wrong (1933). This makes sense, as Mae West plays essentially the same character, just in a different setting. It was nice enough. West certainly writes very wittily and delivers her lines in a charming fashion.

Slightly more enjoyable than the ensuing post-Code West film 'Belle..." although whether the reason is code regulation or not is undetermined. Both films have plenty of quotable material, have Mae West playing the same character and have more or less a similar plot - the strong independent woman with a proneness to sarcasm pursuing her egotistical and mercantile desires and playing with men. Add a little bit of unbelievable plot progressions/choices and zero chemistry with Grant and voila.

Cary Grant is nothing more than window dressing in this top-of-the-line Mae West vehicle. The only problem here is . . . once you've seen MY LITTLE CHICKADEE you have seen the Best of West and all of her other movies suffer by comparison.

I hate to say West is a one-note act, but this doesn't offer much more than She Done Him Wrong, also with Grant. She made me a little dizzy with all her undulating throughout, even when she was seemingly sitting still. Sure, she gets in some great lines, even if she has to force the story around it (another bonkers courtroom scene, which is more of a circus than the opening). Fav moment: different records for different men.

Enquanto nenhum dos filmes escritos e estrelados pela Mae West são obras-primas, certamente são um raio de jornada porque Mae é mais do que ótima, é grandiosa. Talvez esse seja o ápice dela no cinema que só poderia ser pre-code porque Hays era pequeno demais pra ela. Box OP Cinema Pre-Code.

Its all about Mae West and her one liners and sultry appeal. The story is non existent, as are pretty much every other actor. Dated but interesting and entertaining viewing.

Mae West kisses Cary Grant again

I have never been very fond of Mae West. I don't think she's terrible, but I don't find her persona all that funny, which is an issue for me since her whole act is one-liners derived from her persona. That said, I think she's fine here. The pairing with Grant is interesting, but also a bit awkward since they have very different comic personas, and I'm not sure I could ever accept them as a couple.

There didn't seem to be any chemistry between West and Grant in this movie at all, she kept up her showgirl act throughout the entire movie.

Mae West sure was something else! And like with "She Done Him Wrong (1933)", "I'm No Angel" is her movie and hers alone. She might have Cary Grant as her 10 year younger lover, but Grant is just there so West can have someone handsome to play with. A prop in the Mae West show. The climax of the show is the trial where she gets everyones attention and admiration defending herself as the sassiest lawyer you'll ever witness. So you must go and see this sometime.....
