I wasn' t expecting much and stunned by the performances of Judy Davis, Bernadette Peter and especially Hugh Grant. I don't understand at all why this guy turned into romantic-comedies and left the dramas. OK, he's good in comedies but as seen in this movie also really good in dramas. Surprisingly good acting, suprisingly good movie.

A terrific cast is set adrift in overdone, overstated period comedy, which seems more intent on flaunting its knowledge of musical trivia than attempting to present anything resembling coherent (or likable/relatable) characters. As it is, most of the cast are stuck with strident, obnoxious characterisations -- though Grant's quite wonderful comic performance as a foppish Chopin is almost worth hanging in there for.

The main interest in there is not the love story but the scandals and wild life of the artists in it. It still leaves one wanting to know what follows long enough to make through the following less exubérant parts. Crazy though when you know the "silly cough" they mock is tuberculosis, and Franz's actor is missing and presumed dead irl

Very romantic. Chopin was a genious. I like that his girl is so strong and ahead of her time. They definitely complete each other.

Starts very promisingly, but not quite sustained.
