One of those impeccably made films that makes you feel like you're seeing reality. There are no seams showing that clue you into any fakery. It looks real. And seems terribly of the moment in terms of the state of the world.

The style doesn't always work, but the content more than makes up for it with a very up close and personal perspective on a refugee experience.

Loved this for the most part, but it fell into a bit of cheap manipulation in the last act and never really recovered. Too bad, everything leading up to that was pretty much perfect.

Shot-by-shot, it feels like barren, uncompromising reality - which is probably why Winterbottom's post-prod flourishes feel strained and jarring.

Earnest and well-meaning liberal pandering, but pandering just the same. The gimmick of having two Afghani refugees reenact their trek from Pakistan to London is sort of inspired i suppose, but this is one of those instances where "nonprofessional" does not equal "convincing" acting. Marcel Zyskind does the best he can within his limited means to make this look okay, but the faux-authoritative narration and the unnecessary illustrative graphics are less forgivable.
