As an exploration of the voice-over industry and as a satire of the sexual politics within Hollywood, as well as an exploration on familial relations, In a World... is a success. It's a warm, occasionally funny movie that has more ideas than it knows what to do with. It is less successful when it is trying to make you care about its characters instead of its ideas, as they're all so quirky and unbelievable, leading to a disconnect with them.

A tad predictable but still innovative in its own way. Lake Bell establishes herself as a filmmaker to watch.

A really, really good first film. All of the interpersonal shit really worked for me. All believable characters, all weird enough to work in a comedy. Even the minor characters were great. I was completely emotionally invested. That being said, I had some problems with it. Needless speechifying, Demetri Martin's hair, and that lazy ending. These are the only things preventing me from running down the street recommending this movie to terrified strangers.

The best thing about this is how easygoing, breezy, and tossed off it seems--first-time writer/director/stars tend often to shoot for the moon stylistically or self-aggrandize ad nauseum, but Bell's cool just following these people around, watching what happens, maintaining a little distance, making sure we all know everything's gonna turn out okay. It doesn't aim very high, but it's hugely likable, and I await Lake's next directorial offering. Also she's really cute.

Epic battle of epic voiceovering. In a slightly understated metaphorical way. Very confident, but not overly so, debut.

Really enjoyed it. At times a satire on Hollywood life and a statement about sexism within the workplace. I don't want guys to take the fact that feminism is an angle as a stay away as this isn't a "men are completely to blame" message. It's quite funny, well acted, and has a solid core of minor characters that are given better script service than a lot of other movies give to their supporting roles. I look forward to Lake Bell's next film.

A spry and pleasant ensemble comedy set in the world of voice-over work. Lake Bell's direction is competent but her screenplay and performance are both radiant, and I can't wait to see what's next for her. Some of the subplots are underwhelming but the cast is all game. Good-natured female empowerment theme is a highlight as well.

Lake Bell's direction is good, but the screenplay is where the strength of the film lies. Even though it occasionally falls into conventional patterns, it still feels fresh. The setting is cool, and the characters feel real and well-rounded. They got a bunch of my favourite comedians to fill the supporting roles, and there were also some really fun cameos. It's nothing revolutionary, but it's nice and thoughtful and I liked it. I hope Bell makes more films in the future.

Eh. Fred Melamed is really, really good at being a charming douchebag - he's become one of my favorite character actors. Demetri Martin is good enough at being an awkward nice guy. Lake Bell is attractive. Those are the good things about this movie. Everything else is a complete waste of time.

Slight, but very likable, indie comedy from the excellent Lake Bell. The concept - set in the heady world of movie trailer voiceover artistry - is a pleasantly novel one, and the low-key humour here sits well alongside the quirky concept.

This little film manages to be funny, fresh, intelligent and satisfying without any annoying "quirky indie" tricks. Bell shows a great talent for writing and directing actors. What a surprise!

The romance and marriage subplots are pretty forgettable, but as long as the movie sticks to the world of the Voice-Over, it is original, funny, and memorable. Bell's performance is charming and veteran voicer Fred Melamed is very good too.

Totally forgot I saw this. It was ok I guess. I love Bell so thought it would be better. I also love Fred Melamed but urgh I can't tell if he was bad or if he just can't save this terrible character.

Actress-writer-director Lake Bell has some positives going on in her first film. To start, she's a charming lead who can do cool vocal gimmicks. The story also spotlights workers facing sexism in a niche industry. And to top it off, the opening includes a great, sly joke. It just goes downhill from there. The picture looks like a rushed episode of New Girl. There are too many 90's rom-com subplots. And the cameos are obviously called-in favors. Slight recommendation for the admirable message.

Bell is great as the quirky slacker in this family comedy drama set in the hermetic world of the trailer voice-over scene. The post-production scene is convincing without being too inside-jokey, and there are some great cameos and a funny Fred Melamed. It was all left-field enough to keep it fresh and funny without being sickly cute.

Spoilers....... So the father is the big voice in the industry and is grooming his friend/enemy to take over his role in the industry. But the friend sleeps with the father's daughter not knowing who she is....? For a place where everybody knows everybody I find that quite unbelievable.

It's something like the best pure comedy of the year. Lake Bell has a funny and engaging voice (literally ha ha) and when you surround yourself with a winning supporting cast with people like Ken Marino, Michaela Watkins and Fred Melamed, you really can't go wrong. Can't wait to see what Bell does next.

Everything in here fits just a little to nicely together, feeling a bit contrived at times. But lovable characters, sharp dialogue, and a "thank god its different" premise, gives this a sleeper-hit status in my book. Everybody wants to rule the world.. and do voiceovers.

Casual set-up, close to reality, I think that worked. Is both funny and touching. The end is not believable (the father would not act like that -- and if he did, he would not change ...), but ok.

The strength of Lake Bell's script is not in its different take on the make-it-big-in-Hollywood story, but in the attention she pays to her secondary characters, such as Dani's husband, Sam's girlfriend, and Carol's admirer Louis. Except for one sorta villainous character and maybe Sam, everyone in this movie seems admirable in some way, and when two romantic sub-plots come into play, you really want things to work out because by now you really kind of care about everyone involved.

Pitch-perfect situational comedy which finds its own niche right in the self-mocking strip of LA territory between Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. The characters are so well written, each interesting in their own way, while structurally the film is worthy of a place on the syllabus of any film theory course. A simple enough main plot with just enough subplots and minor characters to keep things varied. Lake Bell is a very natural leading lady and I'd love to see her in something else soon.

Bell shows a real knack for directing. There are a few extraneous subplots and characters that put it in TV drama territory (Bell would probably excel as a television writer, if this is any indication), but the central conflict still has a satisfying arc and it manages to stay on point all the way through to the stinger of a final scene. Impressive.

I had read some nice things about this film and was eager to see it. Sad to say, it was a wasted opportunity in my books. I thought that it had an interesting idea/premise, but the execution, story and characters left a lot to be desired. There could definitely be a lot better film taking place in this world, but unfortunately it's not this one. There's not much that would make it stand out from all the other indie dramedies out there.

Much like Greta Gerwig is to Frances Ha, Lake Bell is to In A World. I mean I liked her on Boston Legal and Childrens Hospital but I had no idea she was this talented and could be this unbelievably charming. Suffice it to say I'll be eagerly awaiting whatever it is she decided to do next. Personally though I hope its something a bit more romantic, because I absolutely loved those scenes towards the end with her and Demetri Martin's character.
