There doesn't seem to be any mystery to this murder mystery film. Gassman is delectable as the sole suspect, an archetypal capitalist pig, a kind of fascist relic, wife-beater, shameless liar and manipulator and all-around loathsome slimeball. For Tognazzi as the judge investigating him, he seems to wear his guilt on his sleeve. It's overtly comical, but for Age and Scarpelli the murder investigation format is also a sneaky guise for a layered character study and political commentary.
