Nothing wrong with a simple stoy. I'm a sucker for Tommy Lee Jones when he does his small-town Texas thing (Three Burials, NCFOM) and this one had a good atmosphere to it.

Poorly edited and far too short, "in The Electric Mist" punches above its weight. It has a very solid plot on paper, but when crammed into just under 100 minutes it simply doesn't have time to breathe. There's just too much happening too fast for you to follow it. The overall plot is good and clever, and Tommy Lee Jones is a force, superbly leading a solid supporting cast. Sadly, they didn't get the screen time they deserved. It could have been something special, but it ended up just alright.

Tommy Lee Jones never really seems to disappoint and John Goodman is great as mafia associate Balboni. Unfortunately the two of them can't carry the movie alone and with a so-so supporting cast and jumbled script the rest of the movie doesn't live up to the lead performances. In a lot of places it tries to be a lot deeper than it actually is, but ultimately fails deliver in a lot of aspects. For a Straight-To-DVD movie it's a solid time passer though.

The film adaptation of James Lee Burke's novel suffers from poor editing, making the story painfully hard to follow. Still, it packs some cool moments and a great cast led by Tommy Lee Jones.

Tommy Lee Jones is always reliable in this sort of unhinged cop role, and carries this film adequately with the help of a good support cast. The Southern bayou setting is somewhat atmospheric, and brings more interest than the murder hunt plot - they are always somewhat formulaic aren't they. Best parts are the zydeco, the crawfish and the ceiling fans... take these away and you wouldn't have much of a film left, unfortunately.

The scenes with Goodman & Jones together are great, the rest of the movie is okay as well if a little confusing at times. From what I understand the American version leaves out some pivotal scenes, so if you only saw that one I recommend tracking down the 117 min. version or reading the book.

Okay, I liked the way the cops killed, but the plot was Tommy Lee Jones being very Tommy Lee Jones. And that's not all bad but I've seen that in a lot of movies already.

Great little gem of a movie. Good detective story with bayou ambiance, and set to a lot of swamp pop, zydeco and blues on the sound track.

I had never heard of this movie before watching it, I was pleasantly surprised. The story is different and keeps you guessing and Tommy Lee Jones gives an excellent performance. The rest of the cast is also very interesting.

Too many stories and characters fighting for attention. A curious film but still a bit of a mess.

This low-key pic has a lot going for it as an old-fashioned detective mystery with a Southern Gothic zing, filled with some favorite actors of mine, marked by a significant sense of place.

Bad narration, seemingly lifted straight from the novel's prose, some very strange editing choices. There are a lot of really nice, evocative scenes and images (and performances, especially from Jones who sells a potential cliché of a character), but the whole thing seems to be shabbily glued together, with the tasks of making the plot seem compelling and the characters interesting apparently left as an afterthought. For me it got by on mood, but it has a lot of problems.

Tommy Lee Jones is cool as always but most of the film is pretty generic and weak.

A really good cast especially for a straight toi dvd movie. But I can kind of see why it went that route. This was kind of a confusing movie with a lot going on. At times, with all the confusion, this movie really can move slow at times. It was alright, worth checking out.

Tommy is always great to watch. The script ain't that exciting or special but the movie has an easy pace and is well played. They could have made in something more great, so in the end, it is a fine tima passer. Goodman did very well as bad guy by the way.

A film with great atmosphere and inscrutable intentions. Its plot is so nebulous and misty that it initially appeared to be an ambitious exercise in the craft; a piece of cinematic dementia. But in the end it appears more likely that it was just horrifically edited.

Às margens de um crime estreava há 15 anos no Festival de Berlim. Como cinéfilo Tavernier faz homenagens a torto e direito nesse neo-noir sulista, bom, mas falta algo para uma grandeza de verdade. YTS.
