Not so much forgiving of the Vietcong as it is exposing of the inanity and idiocy of war as a whole. But it's remarkable that this movie, that eviscerates American involvement in Vietnam was released SEVEN YEARS before they finally left. It's infuriating and very interesting as a time capsule as well as insightful on the conflict between officials behind the curtain.

The contemporary urgency and myopia means it's not only interesting for the information it presents, but also for the perspective it gives on the pulse of the debate at the time. The film's obvious anti-war bias doesn't bother me, but the immediacy of the whole thing does render the film a part of the record and it feels narrow in scope despite the wealth of information provided. It's just strange to watch this from a distance knowing what would come in the decade to follow.
