A very suspenseful thriller that ends up feeling a little rushed, but the story is a hell of a yarn. The only problem is that Scorsese decided to remake it with a bigger budget and a longer run time, not to mention he's one of the best directors alive. Even so, this is still a great movie.

Almost impossible to know what the hell is going on in the beginning. They keep showing younger versions of the 2 leads without ever establishing who they are which just makes it very confusing. The Departed is a much stronger film in every way possible. Better acting, directing and writing. I mean the Boss in this one was a fat midget, in The Departed at least Nicholson was menacing and cool. Chiu Wai was great though. But I do thank this movie for giving me a Scorsese gem.

For me it didn't live up to its hype. I found the narrative structure unnecessarily confusing, mostly because of very fast pacing. Story, however is interesting and original. Both Hollywood and Bollywood made their own versions of this film, so that's something. Besides pacing and structure that I didn't exactly loved, technical side of this film is very good. Most of the best Hong Kong movie industry individuals were involved in the making of this film, and that shows.

Although I still feel the american remake was a stronger film, I wanna eulogize this one for its strong character interaction, its originality, script and great performances. The fast pace of the film does make it quite confusing at some points. Nonetheless, Infernal Affairs grabs you, gets its hooks into you and never lets go.

Does in 101 minutes what took The Departed took 151. Pacing is crucial to a thriller and Infernal Affairs gets it spot on, the Departed is saggy by comparison. I prefer this versions ending as well.

Inferior to The Departed in just about every way imaginable. The writing in particular is nowhere near as good, and the cast here cannot compete with the talent on screen in the American version. Far less operatic and theatrical in tone, this rather muted, unremarkable film is watchable but entirely unmemorable outside of being the inspiration for a much, much better film. The relentless use of sappy music and flashbacks only hurts it further.

The Departed is better; no sense beating around the bush. The character development, soundtrack, structure, and pacing is immensely better in Scorcese's film, but that doesn't mean Infernal Affairs isn't a great movie. While watching this, I was surprised to see just how much of the dialogue, key elements, plot points and plot twists were kept for Scorcese's remake. Though the American version fixed a lot of the flaws with this movie, gotta give the original it's due credit.

Saw this after seeing the Departed and have to say this is without a doubt the better film. Is very tight and doesn't have the bloat that Scorcese tacked on. More importantly, several dramatic scenes work here that end up being hilarious in the Departed. Great cop film here, very much worth seeing whether or not you've seen its American counterpart.

Ultimately has the misfortune of now following the superior THE DEPARTED; Lau and Mak's effort is a more stripped-down and gritty effort, but lacks the flamboyant energy of its remake, with Scorsese consistently outshining these guys even in their 'shock' scenes (eg. Queenan's big scene trumps the equivalent here 10 times over). Difficult to objectively score this as the remake looms so large, but on its own terms an enjoyable (if unremarkable) cop drama.

With smooth as silk direction and intelligent screenwriting, Infernal Affairs, isn't just a good Hong Kong film, but one of the better action-thriller cop films in recent years -- perhaps the best since L.A. Confidential, which this reminds me of quite a bit.

Nearly impeccable, and of course had to spring an American adaptation, which isn't bad but this is far better. One guy goes undercover as a cop, the other as a mafioso, and then they go after each other.

The original classic cops n' gangsters cat and mouse game that was remade as The Departed. This flick has just as much star power as the remake, and doesn't shoehorn in a pointless love triangle. Ergo, it's a better film.

Inevitably have to compare it to The Departed. This has better pacing, an interesting style and since it was quicker, it was more of a thrill ride. But it was also cheesy on occasion so some of the more emotional elements didn't work. The Departed had a great cast and some humour, felt more bloated. I think Infernal Affairs might be a better film; I'll rate it higher but they're pretty close in quality anyway. I love the ending here though.

Good twisty narrative with breakneck pace that weaves pretty seamlessly into the moral battle inside the characters. A bit hard to follow at times but the emotional focus keeps it together. In a cheesy way you could say it's a pulpy meditation on the idea of karma. A tense & satisfying tale of the criminal underworld with some hellish metaphysical underpinnings. Lacks both the technical mastery & excess weight of the Scorsese remake & comes off as a sloppier but ultimately more cohesive story.

Very Good. A tense game of treachery and loyalty between two pawns at opposite ends of the law. This is signature great Korean cinema with a unique plot and positively refreshing execution. The inspiration for Scorcese's "The Departed", it makes you wonder why the much inferior remake won the Oscar. Even if you've seen the remake, watch this because there's no substitute for an original idea. Highly Recommended.

Solid and original plot which served as the foundation for Scorsese's remake. The characters in this are all complexly written and pretty well acted. It also requires the audience to pay attention to the small details inherent in the film such as the Buddhist iconography and character quirks. There are a few inconsequential weak points and the soundtrack wasn't all that great but overall it's still one of the best crime dramas to come out of Hong Kong.

In this particular case, the original is nowhere near as good as the remake. Infernal Affairs is interesting and action-packed, but has very average writing and acting and a conservative style. It's hard to review this after seeing "The Departed" first. They seem to me to be of similar quality - the original is more dramatically engaging and subtle, but the Departed infuses the story with more humor and a greater scope. I guess I prefer the Departed, but that's probably just because I saw it first.

While the film's brisk pace is disorienting in the beginning, and it also results in the secondary characters operating more as devices than people, the speed of the story's progression and the tone ultimately serve to the picture's advantage. The action is sharp, and there isn't a single wasted frame: the movie's totally devoted to the story of the two sympathetic protagonists, and how their experiences fit the Buddhist ideal of perpetual Hell.

Very well done and enjoyable thriller with good actors and great cinematography. However, the characters and their relationships could have been more developed and I did have slight problems with a couple of plot elements - for example, it was just silly to make the fake cop's girlfriend to write a novel about a man living two lives.

Clearly awesome, and great source material for Scorsese, but they seriously blow by all character development and creating relationships between the characters at the beginning. I spent most of the duration trying to keep on top of who was who and would have appreciated a little time-out to discover who the characters really were. I am actually dumbfounded on how badly they messed up an awesome story with some of the worst directorial choices I've ever seen in a film. The camera will never stop moving, never stop using a Dutch angle, and perhaps the most offensive part of it is the soundtrack - where it is so overly melodramatic. Every major character's death is played to some over the top music, coupled with a B&W montage of scenes already in the film. Great story, but the film shoots itself in the foot.

Everything that wasn't that great about this, such as side plots, and the lack of a decent connection between the two leads, was fixed by Scorcese, most notably in Vera Farmiga - changing 3 women into one single woman adds a punch to scenes that isn't really present in this version.

While a good film, it feels rushed in its pacing squeezing a grand story into an hour and a half. There are moments of the film which are incredibly well done and well acted, notably the character arcs of the main two. Unfortunately, it jumps in halfway through these characters' arcs leaving us with only the results and less of seeing why they feel this way.
