A prologue shows lumbering, somewhat thick-headed Ingmar climbing a ladder to heaven, where generations of Ingmars sit in dignity around a massive meeting-room. There his father tells him that he must find a wife. But Ingmar then explains that he once took a wife, with unhappy results. Some long flashbacks ensue, showing Ingmar forcing a young woman to marry him. The plot takes some doleful turns, with the result that the woman is sent to prison. (davidbordwell.net)

Sons of Ingmar (1919) is a simple, yet complex, romance story on how a farmer tries to court a wife who doesn't love him. One can say it's a little slow in developing their emotions, but Victor Sjöström translates Selma Lagerlöf story for the movie screen with a vast amount of respect, showing his well documented talents both as a director and the lead actor. Harriet Bosse as the love interest needs recognition for her performance too. The way she goes through her mental torment is remarkable
