occasionally hits the notes i was looking for in a movie that debunks the whole bullshit-society built around instagram and co., but making the protagonist an insane person to begin with significantly took off the edge. this crap is making people sick, it's not sick people making this crap. or is it? aw jeez, whatever. just gimme a star already so i can finally sleep again! come on! anyone?...please?

As someone who has had to deal with an online stalker, this movie gave me chills. It also made me smile at the jabs that it took at the L.A. scene and how their nouveau citizens are a bunch of entitled, fake, millennial hipsters. It's truly frightening to think how easy it is for any crazy person to latch on to your persona through social media, without ever having talked to you. You hear that Melissa???? I know you're reading this, and NO, we are never getting together!

The movie follows a mentally ill, social media obsessed teen stalker. Her self destructive actions are strange but mostly harmless until she is confronted by a blackmailer which becomes the catalyst for bad decisions. It was easy to feel empathy for this character, despite her strange obsession. She just wants to fit in, but her desperate desires become her biggest obstacles. All of the acting was believable and engaging, except for the final scenes. Worth watching.

Being a male who's never embraced social media, Ingrid's desire to befriend a superficial Paltrow/Kardashian-style "lifestyle" promoter felt extremely unrelatable. It also didn't help that the 1st 20 minutes feel tonally unbalanced - a dark comedy with pain but no laughs. But the story takes off w/ a relentlessly unpredictable script & a character who's so hateable (Taylor's brother), that you can't help but become invested in the story if only in the hopes he'll meet some kind of painful end.

The content is obviously relevant to today, and there's vividly drawn characters in relation to Ingrid (Olsen, Russell, and O'Shea Jackson all included). But I wanted to see the characters on screen more to actually explore the themes. Instead, with the inclusion of Nicky, the story falls into a banal formula and ends with a forced Twilight Zone ending. It does not feel like Ingrid reaches even the faintest flicker of truth (which is likely intentional), but it feels like a missed opportunity.

Plaza has been showing greater and greater range with each role, and this may be her best to date. Jackson Jr. is also great, and I kept wanting him to stay on the screen. This film is mostly about debating the authentic self on social media, if such a thing can be determined, and how someone with mental illness fits into that world. It plays as a dark comedy with horror undertones.

What a nice surprise. I was expecting some laughs here and there, but did not realize I was in for such a dark comedy. I love when dark subject material is presented with a light touch to give everything a really jarring feeling.

Tbh, not as dark as I was led to believe, and also much funnier than I was led to believe. The cast is great, social commentary on point, and Ingrid somehow manages to avoid being the most unlikeable character despite arguably being the most unethical. It is more of a drama than a comedy, but I thought the ratio was perfect.

It could probably either be funnier or more tense/thrilling, and the cinematography is exceedingly basic, but the overall package stands nicely on strong themes, biting social commentary, a good script, and interesting characters portrayed by a solid cast.

The kind of sardonic and slightly unhuman brand of comedy that appeals to me, with a healthy mix of sympathy and cringey humour surrounding the disturbed main character, with Plaza perfectly in tune with how the film carefully regards this character.

I've yet to buy the premise behind any of these mental breakdown films. This one held my interest only for a short time. Tries to sell itself as a black comedy but once you get in the tone is morose and the pacing slow. I could watch these actors again but they don't get much to work with here.

Aubrey Plaza is very good in the lead role in this film. The supporting cast also does a good job here. The script starts off like it is going to be predictable but it has some nice moments. Overall I would recommend this film.

It's a well-cast movie about an interesting topic that hasn't been done to death yet. Ingrid Goes West starts strong and quirky, and maintains much of its integrity until the last third, in which it loses narrative sophistication when it relies on well-worn story beats to reach a meaningless conclusion. It's a breezy watch, which is both its strength and its weakness--it's fun and unpreachy, but ultimately doesn't take us anywhere. Still well worth seeing for its novelty/freshness.

Loved this. The comedy is dark as hell and I would almost not mind there being a psychological horror tag as well. The cast is great with Plaza putting in the best performance I've seen from her ever. As it hits its most extreme note it does lose a little steam but ends pretty strongly. Ingrid Goes West is a great movie that focuses on social media and its many downsides. It uses extreme versions of people you'd see on the platform in order to make its points, and for the most part is very successful at doing so. It's not much of a comedy, and it does get a little slow midway through, but it's smart and engaging enough to pretty easily overcome these factors. And, it can always fall back on the performances of Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen.

I'm not sure that it sticks the landing, but its satire of the social media lifestyle/LA lifestyle is rich with painfully accurate, hilarious dialogue and scenarios. It's so easy to come across as on the nose when you're dealing with these kinds of thematic ideas, but the mixture of bouncy romcom music, sunny visuals and surprisingly raw emotions makes for a consistently surprising and enjoyable movie.

A great deconstruction of the fakeness of (how people present themselves on) social media and some people’s obsession with that, without losing track of the humanity in its characters. It very well blends dark comedy with a creepy horror vibe. Aubrey Plaza is terrific in role that seems tailor-made for her. Billy Magnussen as the boasting brother almost steals the movie from her.

Plaza basically plays a mentally unstable version of her real life persona, which fits the movie, but I don't know if it's really anything noteworthy. Stylistically this movie works. I liked how despite making fun of the fake LA culture, they're not afraid to use stuff like "Rip It Up" as a genuine stylistic choice. I like the ending from a narrative perspective, but I also think it confuses the film's message. Overall a good watch, but beware you'll have to put up with some cringey moments.

There's a dark charm about Ingrid Goes West that makes the awkward comedy work. It starts a little stilted, but the chemistry of the cast and a fearless performance by Aubrey Plaza, who really flexes her acting chops here, really sells the film. Although the title character starts off a bit unlikable, as a somewhat unhinged obsessed fan, the film really earns a moving third act that brings all its themes of social media obsession to an immediate relevance that I won't give away.

The main problem with the movie is that it throws a bunch of balls into the air but the writers forgot about gravity so they never drop. The movie is charming despite opening with the inevitable ending, but it completely fails to present the characters as real people in a real world with consequences. Are we're really supposed to believe Ezra keeps tolerating Nicky? Why isn't Taylor bothered by her stalker living next-door? Is Dan a robot programmed to always forgive Ingrid? It makes no sense.

ITs a cool post-modern age / social media tragedy. And hit some delicate notes about human behaviour. But generally its not getting far from the surface. Acting is cool but dialogs and scenario aint sufficient and ending is a bit rush and less powerfull. But ı love 2 way ending. The most downplaying thing about movie is its pretty superficial. Every action and reason-result dynamic works only at the surface.. Nothing detailed or deep at all.

This makes a decent sister film to 'Nightcrawler', in the manufactured, crazed lone wolf niche. I guess the downside for me was how foreshadowing the plot-line was, the only real outlier was coincidentally the erratic brother who brought some (but not much) welcome unpredictability to the run time. This is another instance of 'Black Mirror' did it first, but IGW has another flavour & enough differentiators to not come across as completely derivative.

I was just about to wave goodbye to Aubrey Plaza, as I had grown more than tired of the same character she continues to play. In Ingrid, Plaza is still unstable, but she delivers such a calculated and vulnerable performance that it makes the film. While the secondhand embarrassment is often too much to handle, the blunt takedown of our social media addiction is well done.

Plaza puts on a show here, portraying a social media obsessed woman in such a dynamic way that it is easy to be a little scared of her but also feel sorry for her. Aside from her the movie is a pretty on point satire of the dangers of trying to be social media famous and the risks of becoming someone you're really not. Never boring, shot well, but really you come for Plaza.

Ingrid Goes West takes an exaggerated look at social media (*cough* Instagram) stars and their followers, satirising a generation of vacuous sell-outs and needy wannabes who only differ by their successes. Plaza is both terrific and terrifying in her performance that swings between loathing for her character and pity. There are a lot of cringe-worthy moments, but also a lot of little truths.

It just didn't land for me. A fairly obvious takedown of social media culture, with nothing really interesting or unique to say. And the relationship between Plaza and O'Shea Jackson is cringeworthy throughout. SEMI-SPOILER: The ending was just unbearable in my eyes. There was absolutely no payoff for all the work. She learned nothing, which I assume is the point, but it makes the whole adventure seem pretty pointless.

A sardonically funny gem that takes aim at online cults of personality, INGRID GOES WEST is the film of the social media zeitgeist and more proof of Aubrey Plaza's considerable talents as an actor. It is also an Important Movie, moreso than a large number of pictures that lack INGRID's pitch-perfect SoCal-centric satire and incisive, almost too-obvious message: in the quest for digital validation, it's easy to become someone you would surely dislike.
