Has interesting ideas about literature, storytelling and authorship/readership, but abandons them and opts for a fantasy-romp route which is poorly constructed, disappointing and unengaging. The cast is out of place with the exception of Paul Bettany, who is as always stellar. He should seriously be in every movie - every scene he occupies is a joy to watch regardless of everything else. Its ok, but the squandered potential (cast-wise as well as story-wise) is annoying. Jennifer Connelly? What?

Rufflesack was right: the story contains some elements about storytelling and litteral character development, but the output overlook all possible depth with them. I found only Andy Serkis to have some sense of his character, but even his part was badly written. The plot has too many holes to repeat here and Jennifer Connelly was mere a background actor.

I enjoyed this adaptation of the book and thought it was imaginative and interesting. I'd read the book, and though I was occasionally disappointed with the changes made in the movie, I was mostly excited to see the adaptation.

I love this book, and really enjoyed the movie. For me, it was a different feel than the book-not as dark, much more humor. I thinking knowing that, I will enjoy the movie even more next time I see it. Also, some things were changed (especially towards the end) but I can understand why they were changed as they were. In all, I really liked the film (great acting, good script, lovely scenery) but it is different from what I was expecting-however, that isn't a bad thing per say, just different.

(1.) Gollum sucked as a bad guy. (2.) I must be a simpleton because this movie greatly confused me. (3.) It made no damn sense. ::shrugs::

A fun, original tale that does the book some justice. Paul Bettany is so good that it is a shame the second book was never adapted.

The concept is GREAT, and the cast truly was wisely chosen. The issue is that the writer didn't seem to know where to GO with it. The plot idea is there, but it falls apart more and more throughout the movie, leaving gaping-holes at every turn and constantly raising the "Uh...." response. Had the potential to be amazing, but is overall a let-down.

A film with an interesting concept: the writer can bring stories to life... but the cost is high... Brendan Fraser is awful as ever, but Bettany, Dame Mirren and Serkis are enthralling. Many, many extra points for the final song, too...

It feels like there's a decent and heartfelt story beneath all this, but sadly we only get to see glimpses of it. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare, but the script for the film is lazy, conventional and utterly uninspired. Brendan Frasier is terrible, as usual. Despite its many flaws, the movie is still perfectly watchable. Just don't have high expectations.

There is something about this movie that I just want to like but that thing just wasn't quite there for me. I was glad to see Brendan Fraser back at it. He was surrounded by good actors. The story was interesting. It just felt flat. I'm not sure if it's because they were drawing from popular fiction or because the script seemed dead at times but there was something missing. The villains are great especially Andy Serkis. It is a good movie. It's just not as great as I had hoped.

It's passable as family entertainment,, but really nothing else. Bland, uninspired, dull, generic, the only thing standing out being Paul Bettany's character, but even then, it's not hard to stand out as a mole hill in a prairie.

Interesting idea it is just a shame that all the good bits were in the trailer. I'm a sucker for fantasy films but this was just rather boring. Great idea with a good cast just the plot didn't pull together well and left me feeling that it could have been a whole lot better

It's a great concept and this could have made a good movie, but all the other aspects, from directing to the actuel plot, were poorly managed. It amazed me how old this film looked.

Pretty good story. I've never read the book, but it was an interesting plot. It's pretty underrated, and overlooked. It is a really good kids movie, but as an adult it does at times feel a bit generic. Still I had fun with it. There are quite a few references to classic literature (usually fantasy). Brendan Fraser is stiff, but that's what he plays best, and it works for the most part. I thought Andy Serkis was excellent. This is the first time I've seen him in a non motion capture role.

Even ignoring the fact that this film is a terrible adaptation of the book, as a standalone film it's quite horrible. Perhaps in an attempt to cover most of the bases of the book, the film tries to cram in far too much, often skipping over gaping plot holes, hiding behind melodramatic acting and forced dialogue. All suspense is killed by the continuous development and immediate revelation of any mysteries in the story. I'd stick to the book.

Interesting premise ruined by a clunky hole-ridden plot, bad pacing and a lack of heart. Serkis is underused as the villain and Fraser is as bad as in everything else he appears in. There's also a long list of respected actors doing themselves very little favour by appearing here.

Quite the strange mix of magic and creativity in this film. The story moved along nicely with plenty of action, over the top computer graphics and somewhat sappy storyline. This is a feel good movie, with bad guys brought out of the middle ages, unearthly creatures as well as quite a few familiar characters from different fictional stories. The ending was predictable but we knew it had to have a happy ending. I quite enjoyed watching this even if it was quite silly most of the time.

An unfortunately rushed adaptation of a book that was more about literature, relationships, and humanity than the action and suspense that this aims for. All the characters thoughts, feelings, and story subtext are explained through rapid-fire dialogue in an attempt to keep the audience informed. Bettany and Broadbent are highlights (Mirren is misused), but wasted by poor direction and bumbling co-stars.

A great concept, but all of its potential is lost in the movie. Bad acting, lots of plot holes and the ending is completely out of place and without any logic to it. I, despite what looks to be everyone, really like Brendan Fraser, but even he couldn't save the movie.

One of the worst films I have ever seen and certainly the worst adventure. Helen Mirren, Brendan Fraser and Paul Bettany gives career-worst perfomances and the two kids are plain horrible. Extremely dull and boring. My score goes solely to the Shadowmonster at the end.
