Another in a unrelated series of Warner's penitentiary tours in three different decades. This one is California's notorious Folsom Prison prior to its 1944 reformation make-over. Ben Rickey, the prison's sadistic old-school warden who believes that the prison system if for punishment rather than reformation, rules Folsom with an iron-hand. He highly resents his university-trained assistant, Mark Benson, who does not share Rickey's beliefs. (imdb)

The Talking-Prison VOs got a bit hokey. And I'm surprised that they were allowed to use a real prison for this story, since it wasn't exactly laudatory. But anyway, everything was pretty much like how a Prison Picture oughta be, with some real jerky, tough-talkin' warden who comes off like LBJ (and all the cons right on the edge of mutiny).

The film that inspired a iconic song. The film itself not-so-iconic, but I found it entertaining. It's the basic brutal prison regime theme that's been the norm since the start of the sound era, preaching softer reforms, while battling the old "dictator" way of running the prisons. Does of lot of it great, even if it's a little too obvious to get full effect out of it. Takes itself so serious you almost believe it, while also having fun at how overly serious they project the scenario.
